SLEEPING POSITION = BAD POSTURE?
« on: June 04, 2011, 03:46:22 pm »
Do you think the way you sleep effects your posture?  I always sleep on my side/fetal and it seems to me like my shoulders go forward/ my neck too.  I tried to sleep on my back but I've slept this way as long as I can remember and it's so comfortable.

I'm sure it can make an impact....bad habits can do a lot of little things that we don't always notice!

I grew up a tummy sleeper. However, I sleep on my side now that I know it's better for me. I don't do the back thing at all. It's not my thing and I feel more congested when I'm sick.

You can find me on Youtube!

i definitely think sleeping effects your posture.
for instance, i have mild scoliosis and if i don't
sleep with a pillow between my knees, i feel
very "off" when i wake up and i can feel a shift
in my hips all day at work, where i'm standing
for 8 hours.

we're lying down for 6-8 hours a night and
i don't know how that couldn't effect your
posture, or atleast the frame of your body
over time.
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

While it's true we are lying down for 6-8 hours we don't stay perfectly still. I don't recall exactly numbers but we move a number of times while sleeping.
I was lying in bed the other night, looking up at the stars, and thinking, "Where in the heck is my roof?"

Your sleeping position can affect your posture and the way you feel.   I was sleeping on my side with a not so good pillow and started have really bad headaches.  My posture during the day was no better!  Not standing up straight and sitting slumped over!  I ended up going to the chiropractor because the headaches and neck pain were so bad!  My sleeping habits and posture was making the bone alignment in my neck curved!   After "several" Dr visits,  changing my posture habits, and a new pillow the headaches and neck pain went away!

When I lived up north, I was in need of a new mattress; my back hurt when I got up in the morning. I bought a contour pillow for my head and one for between my legs. I replace them when they wear out. It's worth it to me when I invest in something to maintain my health. What a difference. I also bought myself a SAT adjustable bed with massage(20 year guarantee)......an investment for the future for my 50th birthday. When/if I get a bad cold, I don't have to put 2 pillows to prop myself up; I just raise the top part to the height I want.

I sleep in a fetal position too, and I know it's bad for me.  I also will sleep on my tummy with my neck in a weird position, so it affects my poor whiplashed neck too.  Old habits die hard.

i sleep in all different positions and maybe they do impact ur posture because if u sleep wrong on something u will hurt in the morning and wont want to move that part of the body.
