What are the best beaches to visit in the southeast US?

For my second anniversary, me and my boyfriend are planning a visit to a beach, but we don't know which one is the best. We are looking for something romantic with a lot of options for activities in the area. All suggestions are welcome (:

I might be a little biased as I'm a local, but Virginia Beach is the longest tourist beach in the world.  Plenty of nice gift shops, museums, swank hotels to the less extravagant if you prefer, restaurants, and an affordable water park only a couple miles from the main beach(Ocean Breeze waterpark).  One hour away from the beach is Busch Gardens Williamsburg which is continually rated the most beautiful amusement park in the U.S.  It is themed after Europe, has excellent food, world class rides, and great shows.  I could give you more information on things to do if you are interested.

I would agree with Adam, I love Virginia beach and am heading there the last week of July with the family. We always take the chessepeake Bay/bridge tunnel. The kids love to take a walk around when we get to the center island and watch them fish. I have also heard great things about the Outer banks in North Carolina, Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, and I always enjoyed St Augustine Beach in Florida. Visiting the old towne and walking around is very nice after several days on the beach.

Cocoa Beach in Florida is a great beach.  My husband and I love to go there; we go every summer.  The closer you can get to the Air Force base the better.  It is isolated (not many people) and it's so neat to watch the planes take off and land.  Oh...and the sunsets are so romantic!

Virginia Beach is decent but my favorite is Myrtle Beach. Nags Head is something you should check out as well!
