Has anyone ever been electrocuted?
« on: August 03, 2011, 02:07:06 pm »
My husband is an electrician and he was working on someones house in the attic and he was drenched in sweat.  He didn't turn off the power.  He said he has done it before and with the work that he was doing it was unnecessary.  He said he wouldn't of got shocked if he wasn't soaked.  When he got shocked he said he couldn't move.  When we realized he could move his other hand he used that to pull away and then he got released.  He has a big burn hole on one of his fingers and burns on his back.  He refuses to go to the doctor cause we can't afford it.  I told him that doesn't matter and he should go anyways.  He won't listen to me.   :'(

Oh my goodness, that sounds awful! I do not know anyone who personally got electrocuted. However, my dad works in the oilfield and he once found a guy who had been electrocuted to death. It was just an accident at a dangerous work scene. I hope your husband listens to you about going to the hospital and that he is extra careful from now on!

We set up an electric fence to keep our dog from digging out and I did shock myself on that a few times, but it wasn't really that bad. It did feel like it gave me heart palpitations for a while though.

First of all I am sorry to hear about your husband being shocked and I hope that he recovers fully.  The only time I was seriously shocked was abou 15 years ago when I worked at McDonalds.  I was 17, first job, and told to mop behind the vat fryer  It was on wheels and though not light I was able to move it out from the wall to mop the dirt and grease from behind it, until I was significantly shocked.  I don't know what the voltage was, but the plug was round and the size of my fist.  Apparently when I pulled the fryer away from the wall the plug came slightly out of the socket and when I splashed the mop water it hit the live current and I got hit.  I say hit as that is what it felt like.  I will probably always recall this.  I felt the electricity go up my arm and straight to the center of my chest.  It felt like someone punched me in the chest and then it felt like my chest was caving in, very much like what I assume a heart attack might feel like.  It was only an instant, but I temporarily fainted and when I came to I was given a free meal and told I had the rest of the night of paid. ::)  Wow what a deal for me. :-   I have never been very litigious and the thought of suing never crossed my mind.  Not sure if I would have had a case anyway.  My chest hurt for the next week at least it seems.  I'm lucky and hope your husband is the same.

Only VERY slightly. I was plugging in a hair dryer and some how my finger nail got into the socket and I got this mild jolt up my arm. Made it tingly then numb.

Ouch.  As long as the burns arent bad, and he's not showing any other signs of distress, he should be ok.  Just keep the burns clean and disinfected.  My husband has gotten jolted once or twice, and he's normally pretty careful about messing with electricity.

I haven't been electrocuted to such a degree as that before. The most I've ever experienced were much smaller shocks. I'm glad I haven't had anything worse. I don't like getting shocked like that, even static shocks can hurt sometimes.  :-
