Ever got yelled at for doing a good deed
« on: August 22, 2011, 05:33:48 pm »
I honestly didn't think it was possible until today...earlier this afternoon i tried to help an elderly lady with her groceries up the stairs and she just yelled at me telling me she did'nt ask me for help...it was so embarrassing. I just had to tell this story on FC.

I haven't gotten yelled at for helping anyone. I just ask them first. If they say no, then I just leave them there struggling with the 10 bags they're trying to carry.  ;)

I don't think I've been yelled at, but I surely have been ignored or not appreciated. Of course I do certain things without expecting anything back too.

Yes.   I wonder if it pays to be a good dooby!   Sometimes.   Usually, I know it pays!

My husband got yelled at for cutting our neighbors grass! He was tying to be nice since he has a riding mower and they had a push mower. They actually got mad and said that they were worried what the neighbors would think... We are the neighbors, lol!

I have learned that many people are in their own special place between their ears. 20% of them are going to be upset no matter what you do. They just like yelling. I know it is weird but true. When I do a good deed I try to do it for the glory of God and then let it go. :)

Don’t worry about it. If you genuinely wanted to help her from your heart without expecting anything in return, you’ve already been blessed from above.

maybe because she was on her daily morning exercise routine and you interrupted her at the wrong time :P

Did you ask her for help or assume she needed it just because she was older?

This hasn't happened to me before. But I have been barked at for doing something helpful, just because I did it a bit differently than they would have done it. Seriously, if you're going to ask me to do something for you DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT IT otherwise you can do it yourself.

I don't know the details, but I get it.  Sometimes people, me included, prefer to do things for ourselves.  Perhaps it's stress or fierce independence.  Age and disabilities cause some good samaritans to think people need help, but accepting the help makes the person feel helpless.  They may be trying to do what they can as long as they can.  You know, use it or loose it.  I"m not one for joining gyms, and I have arthritis in my feet and knee, but I can still do my own lifting and carrying to work on my upper body strength and feel like I'm earning my keep.

When I was a caregiver we were taught to not rush in and do things for the client, but to encourage and facilitate the client doing things for themselves.  It kept them strong, kept their morale up and boosted their self esteem.

Sometimes people think they're being helpful, but they really aren't.  I've noticed that some people rush in to help by doing what they think you need help with and they get it wrong.  The best way to help is to ask.  "Do you need help?"  "How can I help you?"  "What can I do to help?"

Don't let it stop you.  Compassion is the best thing to cultivate on the planet, it's just that sometimes it means letting go.  :angel11:

Don't worry about it. It was the thought that counts. I work with the elderly and sometimes they are just bitter towards life or are having an off day. Do you know how many times I had to stop myself from asking "who pissed in your prunes today?"  ;D
