I never heard of that one before. I usually wear whatever I have. I don’t follow the rules of fashion as long as I am not buck naked. Labor Day is coming soon next month.

That's an out dated rule that is ridiculous if it's 90 degrees outside in Sep and Oct.

Silly old fasioned idea which I never understood, especially in Florida where we don't even really have "seasons" I never paid much attention to it and continue to wear white clothing and shoes whenever I want.  My mother-in-law said something to me once about it and I paid no attention to it because she thought she was extremely fancy anyway which I could care less about.

It started with temperature. Like how you never see black cars in Israel. Dark colors attract heat, and light colors deflect it. So if you wear white when the weather starts changing, you won't be as warm when the cold seasons come.

I think this actually is the reason. So at last, a practical myth lol

Harder to keep clean in the Fall/ Winter ? Just my guess. I have no clue. No one has accused me of having good fashion sense.

I have discovered there are two reasons as to not wear white between Labor Day and Memorial Day:

1.)  This is an old Southern rule.  When the "new rich" were being integrated into the wealthy class, they made a lot of fashion faux pas.  One of those was wearing whites all year round. This was probably because of the novelty of wearing crisp whites, since the lower classes had a harder time keeping whites looking clean and tended to avoid them.  The established rich set up some fashion etiquette to help them along.  Originally, this rule was just for shoes.  It was specifically for high heels and for sandals.  The rule has spread and is now applied to many garments of clothing.  The closer on the body the clothes are to shoes, them more people apply the rule.  Thus, white pants or skirts are sometimes seen as taboo, but not so much white shirts.

2.)  White is cooler, as it deflects heat which makes it appropriate for the summer. Black and darker colors absorb heat and keep you warmer thus making them better suited for winter.

Winter whites are various shades of off white. Bone, ivory, egg shell and cream are examples of winter whites. These are all fine during the winter. Also, at a wedding, the bride is still allowed to wear crisp white.
Have a wonderful day!

first off, i personally don't care if i wear white after labor day. But, if you do follow the "rule", for how long after labor day are you not supposed to wear white? End of the month? end of the year?

You can wear any color any time you want. When I worked in health care, I wore white every day of the year. The dress code was not excused because it was after Labor Day.

I have always thought  this was an old wives tale started by someone insane.  What next-not wearing red, black, blue, purple etc.  Its a ridiculous myth that I have never followed.

I remember when I was young no one wore white after labor day unless they were getting married. I don't know specifically why it was just a rule. All that changed with the advent of winter white in the fashion world. Now it's an acceptable practice. It is strange though. (twilight zone music) ??? ??? ???
