No medical insurance
« on: September 11, 2011, 08:23:43 am »
So my health insurance coverage was terminated and I am down to one prescription left and can't refill. I am thankful that the one left is my blood pressure medicine.

I can definitely relate.  I cannot get insurance as an individual because of pre existing conditions.  Recently I found out that each state has a program where you can get insurance if you have been denied elsewhere.  It is pretty expensive, but at least I have it now.  I don't know what the answer is.  I think everyone should be able to have insurance, but I don't think it should be free.  I think that maybe if you can't afford it you should have to do community service or something in return, but it is horrible to have to go without medicine that you need or treatment when you don't have insurance.  People say that it doesn't matter because those people without insurance just go to the ER for free, but that isn't true.  Many people who can't qualify for medicaid yet can't afford private insurance just go without.

Since I have no job, I have to volunteer, but I get Medical Insurance for free.... check with your state about any benefits you might be able to receive....

You can go to a dental college and get cheap cleaning.  When I didn't have insurance a few years ago I went to a nearby college that was training dental hygenists I only paid $25 for full xrays and cleaning.  My mother just did the same thing the other day and she didn't pay anything because she is a senior although she has insurance her cleanings would have been about $50.

They can be slow and it usually takes them two days to complete everything.  The are supervised by their professors.  I recommend it to anyone needing a check up on a tight budget.  They can't do things like fillings but an actual dental college might offer other services.

I feel your pain.  I have only hospitalization.  So far this year we have about 6 grand in medical bills for checkups adn old folks testing.  Can't afford regular coverage and didn't realize how expensive it would all be.  Husband just started meds that cost $135 a month.  Quite a shock after having had full coverage paid everything insurance though my job for 30 years.

check at the health dept. and see if they can tell you where to get the med. your need.  Most large towns have place that are with free health care, maybe a church could tell where to go. Just keep asking.  Call your provider wher you get your blood pressure med. maybe they have free samples.

Check if there are any free walk-in clinics around. If you live in a large city they usually have those. If you need gyno work done, check planned parenthood. They can refer you to cheap doctors who can do female stuff like that for you if you need a pap smear or something done. I work ft making minimum wage and after bills and rent I can't afford insurance but apparently I make too much money to qualify for anything else so I go without. Which sucks because lately I have been getting these horrible nosebleeds and I have never had any sort of nose bleed before, and they last for at least 10 minutes. I feel so light headed afterwards but I don't have the money to drop just to see what is wrong. For all I know the doctor will say I have been sneezing too hard and that's why and I don't want to pay $300 for someone to tell me that!

Every county I have lived in has some sort of free health clinic. Every emergency room must at least give you an exam if you have a valid problem. They will also give you samples of meds and can give you info on where to find free or inexpensive doctors. If you belong to a faith based church, temple, mosque or other they will know of a doctor that will take a look at you. Call 211 for info from United Way Volunteers. Keep asking!!!
