how do you clean super abused walls
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:47:36 am »
I have a friend and she is moving to an apartment. The landlord said he will not clean it and she has to clean it if she want, she is short on money and she needs an advice how to clean the walls and the floor they have all kind of crayons and colors and pen writing too, the floor seems never cleaned since ages and she doesn't know what to buy and how to do it
I though the best way to clean the wall is to paint it but maybe some body has different solution

those are really great ideas, i was gona add that if painting is the option ... sometimes the hardware stores (lowes, home depot, ace hardware) have a bargain bin of returned paint that wasn't exacting the mixed color the people wanted.  sometimes you can get a gallon of quality paint for $5 or less.  i know about not having enough money tho. plain ol white semi gloss paint isn't too expensive sometimes either.

check close to completed construction sites around the dumpster area too, sometimes they throw away partial cans of paint, etc as it is not logical to store this stuff after the job is done, contact the construction company and ask permission to take the near empties.  that would be a free solution to paint.

i've found some pretty neat things in dumpster ... hate to say it but i have.  furniture in the back of furniture stores, small repairs and presto!

also ck the carpet store dumpsters ... when they replace carpet sometimes it's still in fairly good shape.  rich people truly throw nice stuff away!  i don't know what type of flooring the apartment has now but if it's carpet, cleaning is adviseable just because of nastiness of others ...

anyway, i'm running on as is my tendancy ...

Well thank you all for the ideas, my friend tried it and some other ways and she said the best way to take off the crayons was baking soda and a solution of dish detergent (She used the ajax dish cleaner solution) with white vinegar and water
She said she had to rub it hard to get it off because it wasn't recent. it takes time she cleaned the living area and she is going to continue to the bedrooms,
The Nail polish did an awesome job with the markers and pen too

For the carpet she didn't start yet
So if you have any other good ways to clean it please do

Thank you

Believe it or not windex works great on walls.  But if that doesn't work then just paint the wall.

Repaint it.  Paint isn't that expensive.

Paint is the easiest & least expensive way. The prettiest one, too :)

The landlord has to furnish a clean apartment.  Call your local government office and report this.  It is illegal.

Paint the walls.  Use Goo Gone for the floors if you have to clean it.  Keep track of your time and expenses to bill the landlord for the work.

In addition to the above, if you can, take pictures of everything that's wrong with the apartment.  If you don't document the "move in" condition, sounds like this landlord may try to stick you with a bill when you move out or keep your security deposit for "damages" to the apartment that were really pre-existing conditions.

Painting is an option if the walls aren't carrying a smell. Although, I believe the cheaper way is to use Mr. Clean Eraser or I have heard Windex does the job for crayons. On another thought, shouldn't that landlord have cleaned it himself? I mean I'm sure he charges a deposit and that is what the deposit is supposed to be for. :confused1:
