I have off already because I have a week of vacation starting today but it's not considered a holiday for my job so even if I was working I wouldn't get holiday pay for it.

I don't remember it being a national holiday we have enough of them.  My daughter when she got married 10 years ago it was on Columbus Day and the court house was open because she filed her marriage certificate and everything.  Her Monday the banks are closed and One school is off but some of the surrounding schoools are still having school. I don't know why some are off while others are still going to work and school it doesn't make sence.  I don't think it should be a holiday if the court house doesn't close than nothing else should either.  I think it should be the same for everyone not just for half the county.

I'm on leave from work anyways today -- but it is a holiday for my job (federal government)
I can't imagine that the court houses are open --

It's a holiday for some government workers, but for everyone else it's a regular work day.

Columbus day seems like a reason to give the kids off of school.  When I was a teacher, I would look forward to Columbus Day....But now that I am a stay at home mom (for now), I hate these holidays....Especially when it's raining outside and I have nothing to do with the kiddies.

I thought it was Magellan who discovered America? I've been out of school too long. But I'm all for 3 day weekends if people have it off. My parents didin't get it off.

I completely forgot that it was Columbus day today until my neighbor, who gets Federal holidays off, brought some home made tamales. My kids are very sick and have been since Wednesday. I was very grateful for the tamales. She's really good at making those!

You can find me on Youtube!

I don't have Columbus day off, and I don't think many people, other than bankers, get it as a vacation day anymore. While I wouldn't turn down an extra vacation day, I can think of many other people more deserving of celebrating through a national holiday. He didn't exactly "discover" America. The vikings got here first. And Columbus certainly wasn't the nicest guy. He was extremely brutal to the native americans he encountered here.

When I worked before, we never have a day off for Columbus Day for many companies except for the banks and post offices, and maybe some schools? I personally don’t think it is significant enough to become a national holiday
