I grew up with clip on earrings, so I am coming from a whole different perspective.  I was a dental hygienist for 30 years and had up close and personal contact with people's ears.  I was constantly observing the holes in peoples ears who for whatever reason were not wearing any earrings at all.  It made me wonder if getting your ears pierced was a good idea.  Then there were the mothers whose babies had grabbed an earring and ripped it right out of the ear.  In my house I made my girls wait until they were in high school to get their ears pierced. Once waited til college. Even to me, that seems a little extreme.  Peer pressure would come into the picture now.  Hmmmm.  I guess early teens would be my answer today, taking into consideration that the child wants her ears pierced in the first place.  Just my two cents.

i pierced my little girls ears at three months and that was even too late in my opinion. but the clinic will not allow it before 3 months.

There is no time frame for piercing ears. It can be done at any age but I think if a child is wearing diapers, it is too early. Wait until they are old enough to make the choice for themselves.

The pinch from getting your ears pierced isn't too bad.

I definitely don't think it's ok when they're like 3 or 2.
I got my ears pierced originally when I was 5, but it got infected so my 'real' piercing didn't last until I got them around age 10.

I hate seeing the little babies with their ears pierced. I don't care if it 'looks cute,' you're the one that wants it, not the kid. Let the child grow up, and if later down the road they want to pierce their ears, let them. I've never had pierced ears and I'm glad my parents never pierced them when I was little.

I agree.  You are not giving them a choice in the matter.  I had my ears pierced as an adult and I regret it.   I never cared for them.  I only did it because I was getting my nose pierced and my bf at the time said I wouldn't look right with my nose pierced but not my ears so I went ahead and did it even though I never cared about wearing earrings.  After I got them done they formed keloids behind my ears and I had to get them frozen off.  After I had them removed I let them close up and I never wore earrings again.

If I had a daughter I would wait until she was old enough to express her opinion as to what she wanted.  I think 11 or 12 would be old enough if she expressed an interest.

I don't think a person should pierce a child's ears. It is not your body and since it is a lifetime issue the person who has to live with it should make the decision. So my opinion is no. I also feel that it should not be done until the person in question is at least 18. So sue me I'm old fashioned. :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

I don't think a child's ears should be pierced. To my knowledge no health issue is involved so piercing a baby's ears is just a matter of choice. That choice should be made by the child when they are ready.

I think ear piercing can be done at any age. But personally, I think I would feel more comfortable waiting until the child can make the decision. You're really not sparing the child all that much pain by getting them done early. It just feels like a little pinch. I've had shots that hurt worse.

My mother-in-law had my daughter's ears pierced when she was about 5 months old. It's much safer than an older child because they only use pure gold and she didn't have the strength or interest to pull them out. I think I will be thanking her when all the other 5 yr olds are getting infected ears from playing with thier piercings. I think I was 8 or so when I got mine pierced and I wear at least small earings every day. :fish:

Never against her will.  So doing it when she's too young to make up her own mind on whether she wants them or not is a no no.  Dare to be different, people.  She doesn't have to get them pierced just because she's a "girl".  My mom never pierced mine and I'm in my mid 20s and still don't have them pierced, with no intention of ever doing so.

Thanks for not altering my body without my consent, Mom!  lol   ;D

I think for little girls having their ears pierced is different from boys. I don't really have any reservations because some people get their girls ears pierced when they are babies and others wait till they're older.  I think it's appropriate for girls to get their ears pierced from when they're young but you have to be cautious and make sure to maintain the cleanliness of their ear lobes and so forth.
