Is it worth going to college in today's economy?
« on: October 31, 2011, 07:33:33 pm »
Personally, I'm not sure if it is. It depends on the degree obviously, but really a majority of ppl out there are not going into their fields.

I am not sure if college is worth it. Maybe a vocational school will be better. The courses are more focused on what you want to do (no biology, etc) and the costs are lower.

Well, I already hold a BA that I earned in 2000 and it hasn't helped me at all, but I still went back to school this past fall for a more specialized degree. I lost my job of 7 years last fall and have only been able to get a part time job this month, for 7-10 hours a week. So, I'll take my chances.

It's worth it, only if you have decided what you're going for is what you really want to do. I've seen countless friends and family waste their years in college going for a degree they didn't really know about it, only that it made them alot of money(Business). Sad to say, more than 50% of them ended up going back for another major essentially wasting thousands and dollars and years of time.

I paid my way through two bachelors degrees, one in environmental science, one biology, and i have no job to show for it. My family probly thinks im nuts, but i think it was well worth it! its a field i love and i use my knowledge and experiences every day, even if they are not making me money. of course i love school, so it was not difficult for me to be motivated. if i had the money i would go back to school, and probably still not get a job!

Life is long and college is an experience that you will treasure for the rest of your life. Don't miss out on it under any circumstances. College is not about corporate America it's about finding yourself and testing your limits. It's about exchanging ideas and creating contacts and friends you can have for the rest of your life.

College is definitely still worth it. It's an incredible opportunity to meet different people while exploring academic life while gearing yourself toward a career.

The economy isn't going to be the same in 4-5 years as it is now, so I wouldn't base any decision on today's economy.

An education is priceless however there are other ways to be educated than going to college.  You should look at the all the costs (time, money, benefit) verses the potential gain.  I was glad to have the experience of going to college.  Fortunately I went at a time when student debt wasn't as crushing as these days.  I graduated with zero debt and never had to take out any loans for college.

College does not guarantee or teach you how to get a job one can go other routes like trade schools or other programs for that.  I did not go into the field I studied for.  For me the college experience was more than the classes I took it was the overall experience of learning and experiencing things that had nothing to do with getting a degree.

If you are an adult going back to school it's not the same experience as a 17 or 18 year old considering going to school.

It is if it helps you get into a job that any and everyone need you in a particular field.  A few  months back a woman had just earned her law degree and could not find a job.  So she is now trying to open her own law firm.  But it takes people to have a successful business.

it is only worth if you have a plan. If you get good grades then you should be able to qualify for grants and financial aid. If you go to party then do not even bother and just find a job.

Do the research before attending college now. Some fields are absolutely screaming for people. You can't go wrong in the medical field as the baby boomers are going to need more and more medical care of all kinds. Pharmacy is another field where there are always job openings. I also heard that some specialized engineering jobs are so scarce that those jobs are always open. Get grants if you can qualify then the tuition and student loans will be a minimum. Remember.....student loans are never forgiven and are always paid back under any circumstances.

This economy is bad, but if you do your homework, there are fields that are still hiring, Zero in on those. A college education is good to have, but does not guarantee you a job. You must specialize your skills and education to what is needed in this day and age.
