Do you need a psychiatrist?
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:18:56 pm »
How do you know you're in need of a psychiatrist? I take it what a psychiatrist does is listen to your and help you figure out how to relieve what's bothering you mentally. Someone to talk to and who "understands."

The truth is some people just don't have anyone to talk to at all. Others refuse to tell someone what's bothering them. And still others refuse to let out their bad feelings which overtime accumulates and cause mental problems. And then, they're in need of a psychiatrist.

What do you think? How would you know if you're in need of a psychiatrist.

in my experience, a psychiatrist is much easier
to talk to than a friend or family member because
they have absolutely no opinion of you before you
walk through their door. i thought it would be weird
talking to a stranger... but i actually ended up spilling
more of my guts than i ever would with someone
i actually knew - even my fiance.

i think that's the whole point of psychiatry...
to make you feel safe enough to step into the darkest
corners of your mind and help yourself sort through
things by getting it out into the open. i was surprised
at how natural i spoke of things that i would otherwise
have bottled up forever  :confused1:

anyway, i knew i was in need of a psychiatrist when i
started shying away from being myself because of a
traumatic experience that i had never let myself
"break down" from. lots of denial, guilt, anger, etc
that i didn't want to admit to myself existed...

this is way too deep for a FC post, lol  :) but you get
where i'm going...
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

I think I need a psychiatrist, but I was out voted. The voices said we don't need one.
I was lying in bed the other night, looking up at the stars, and thinking, "Where in the heck is my roof?"

I think the majority of the world does, but no one wants to admit it!  :P

I agree that people that keep things bottled up are generally unable to understand or work through their problems. I think you need to be able to voice your thoughts and problems in order to correctly process them and find a solution.

I think getting it out beats the alternative, dealing with depression for years and ruining relationships or living in the shadows of what you could be.

Used to. I suffered the symptoms of clinical depression for years.  During that time I needed a psychiatrist to regulate my meds.  Since I've been symptoms free my family doctor simply re prescribes as needed.  No more psychiatrist.

I think it's a good idea. It's someone you can be totally honest with and not have to worry about what they think or feel about what you're saying and just talk and work things out. Family and friends can be good to talk to sometimes but you can't really let go and talk..I've been meaning to go myself but don't have any time to so that just makes it worse for me right now..i'll figure something out i'm sure. One thing I was taught was to write down what i was feeling or thinking and that does help sometimes

Maybe I could use one with the constant stress at work and sometimes my personal life, but I'm not willing to pay the fees involved either. I rely on talking with family/ friends and Youtube clips to calm myself.

My doctor and psychologist and a couple nurses said I needed to see a psychiatrist, but the voices in my head told me they were full of it.   :BangHead: :BangHead:

More on the serious side, someone once told me if I questioned if I needed to stop drinking, then I probably do need to.  If I questioned if I'm addicted to something, then I probably am.  So considering that enlightenment, if one feels they might need to see a psychologist/psychiatrist, and asks themselves that question...it's time to see someone.  That is usually your inner self asking for help. :dontknow:

I really like your response. It'll full of truth. Your inner self asks for help sometimes we ignore it and turn to other things or 'ones.
