If you want to know what it is just take it to your bank. Why waste time with so much wondering? I throw all mail like that torn up and in the garbage.

people should try to be more wise.  WHY WOULD A PERFECT STRANGER SEND YOU A CHECK THAT BIG?  Don't trust them

One of my cousins got a check like that, and the greedy people that they are, they cashed it, they got to explain the whole situation the next day, in a police station for fraud. Now we just laugh about it though :)

you hit the nail on the head. If you didnt do anything to earn the money.  then why do you think someone would just give you money? to think that is just foolish.

pull up the address on the bank and call them and provide them the info for the check and see if they say its good, if so then go for it but ... if they say its bad and to provide it to the postal police then do so immediately. You do not want to go in for hard time on something you did not do, trust me on that. Had a few times where I had money come my way and did not know what for and called it in and they told me its a no go and if I had cashed it there would have been police at my door. Where I work we have a saying called C.Y.A. meaning Cover Your ... you can figure out the last word.

Sounds like on of those mystery shopping check that I get at least once a month.  You don't give us much info, but tons of people here have gotten them.  They may just have forgotten to put the instructions in the envelope with the bogus check.  Hope I am wrong and it is from a long lost relative!
I do get those mystery shopping offers in the mail which usually are postmarked from Canada and their check amounts are normally random numbers that range in the thousands.

Interestingly enough, this was fed'ex overnight in a hard cardboard envelope from Florida by Adesa Inc. I would not be surprised if it was from one of those "loan" offers.

Here's a scanned photo of what was the only document found in the envelope:

The check itself is from TX but the envelope containing the check is postmarked from FL.

Not sure if that is unusual or another red flag. probably is (?)

Should I have the Chase verify its authenticity? Or could this be one of those checks that are found to be 'fake' weeks/months later?

WOW that is amazing that people take the time out to do scams like that. But I guess desperate people will do desperate things to get money.

Call The BANK ASAP better yet go to your local or closet branch and take it to them!!! It is a fraud and they are trying to get your money and then you can get charged and be responsible for all money stolen from the bank.
I got one like it and took it to the bank it was made from to have them check it out and a FED investigation was going on about the fraud already!!!
Glad I checked it out but had suspected it already and was scared to cash it even tho desperatley needed the money...

My sister got one of those checks and I deposited in my checking account and it cleared than was took back out of my account and lots of things bouncing.  Should of researched itback to them, but I wasn't on the computer than and didn't look in to it.  I do now I don't participate in those espesially when you have to send money back to them. I would not participate if I were you.
