[Global Warming]
« on: November 20, 2011, 12:35:48 pm »
I'm in no way an expert on this topic, but I was having a discussion with my boyfriend (who is also not an expert) and what he told me was bone chilling. I would love some insight.
Obviously, people are afraid of us destroying the Earth with pollution and the like. However, it is very strong and, much like humans, capable of adapting to situations. He basically told me that the planet is adapting to wipe out humans, but since we're resourceful, it won't succeed in our lifetime. However, the Earth will not allow us to destroy it because it will destroy us first like it has to other life forms.
So, the Earth is trying to kill us?!?!
Don't flame me with your negativity or unfounded banter.
Please, only educated responses because this is something I would like to know the truth about.

The Earth undergoes natural cycles of warming and cooling.

The debate is wether man made pollutants are effecting global temperatures.

The debate is ongoing.

There isn't any real debate that the Earth is adapting to wipe out humans... it isn't happening.

Do you have any sources? I'm interested in supported facts, if possible. Thanks!

Considering that the earth used to be both cooler and warmer than it is now and many times each, I would use that as a starting point.

Start here and learn about both sides of the debate:

http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1W1TSNA_enUS376&=&q=global+warming+debate

You'll get a good idea of what each side is saying about the issue.

After that, you'll need to wade through peer reviewed scientific studies on the subject to look at the data and arrive at your own conclusions.

That's the problem. Everything I've read is completely biased. >_<

I agree that we are totally messing up the environment (especially in Africa where I come from), but do we have enough data to establish that this is not a natural cycle in the earth's behaviour since long before man's arrival?

I would love to know! That's what I'd trying to find out. Unbiased evidence because everything I've been is completely one-sided. :/

enough data?  we have been keeping somewhat detailed records for less than 200 years and the earlier records relied on things like bear fat.  The world has largely been considered "the world" for just where people frequented (for the sake of referencing historical cases describing temperatures in imprecise degrees of hot and cold).  It is only more recent that we have blended in global average temperatures using more precise equipment and comparison points.  I don't think we can make conclusions on anything at the moment and when this evidence is exposed to be deliberately corrupted for bias I will never consider it.  I am old enough to remember the "global freezing" scare of the 70's and "I will not be fooled again"...

I'm not which is why I made this post. I'm seeking evidence.

Understandable indeed.  It was just back then all the brilliant scientists were warning of our impeding doom from global freezing and a coming Ice Age.  They didn't blame it on mankind though but I remember being frightened and concerned then and I will not go through that foolishness again.
