Is it worth getting into debt just to buy Christmas presents?
« on: December 03, 2011, 03:33:26 pm »
January is usually a bad month financially after spending much money on the holiday and presents. Should we not go back to making gifts for Christmas and buying gifts for birthdays?

If you have enough time and creativity, sure why not?

I don't think Christmas is worth getting into debt! If you can't shop for expensive gifts this year, then your unable to. If you can make gifts or shop for cheaper ones that might fit your budget better!

I don't think anything is worth going into debt personally.  If I can't afford it directly I save until I can.  I understand things are different for others though and I suppose their are reasons for having to.
There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Never go into debt if you cannot pay back in the future. The safest thing to do is to NOT go into debt at all to avoid future complications and problems with your credit score. If you really need to go in debt, do it wisely. (for a car, house, student loan, etc) Don't do it for selfish or unnecessary things like this. Your family and friends will understand and will always love you whether or not you give them a present or not. You can give away cards, and a box of cards are less than $5 at walmart and dollar store.

Yes, I think we should make more presents and gifts for both occasions actually. I do not think Christmas is worth getting into debt at all. I try to limit my son to 3 gifts each Christmas and only 1 present for his birthday. I think less gifts per occasion, considering you don't buy many toys, gifts and presents throughout the year, makes birthdays and Christmases more special and rewarding. I always stick to the true meaning of Christmas anyways.

No not at all.  My spending habits have really changed in the past couple of years.  I took Financial Peace University and it really helped me with some of those impulsive spenditures especially around the holidays.  I would have to agree with everyone in that it is not worth getting into debt for.  I make a policy of not spending what I don't have.

I personally like to buy people presents for Christmas. I usually TRY not to overspend but sometimes it just happens. I think if you can pay off the debt rather quickly then YES it's worth it, but if you are going to have to make serious cutbacks bc of it, then NO!

We were so broke this year. I made all of our XMas presents and with the exception of one shallow family member, everyone adored them. We did jar gifts and each one was personalized and made with a ton of love.

I buy gifts all year. When I see good deals, I take them. I have a closet full of gifts. Anytime the kids have a birthday party to go to, I go to the closet. If there is something expensive they want for Christmas, I do tons of research and buy it for the cheapest price. I never buy anything at retail value.
