Ya I saw something on the news stating that price of rice has gone up considerably this past year. I've noticed my cart not looking as full off 200 to and its a major bummer when you are trying to feed your family home cooked meals everynight and you run out of supplies mid-month.

I used to budget $120 a month, until I realized that I wasn't getting enough food to feed four people for a week.  I cut in other places so I could raise my budget to $160, but even then we are skimping.

It is very hard to shop these days.  The cost of living is outrageous.  I shopped with about $200.00 per week and still ended up going back to the supermarket during the week for snack and fruits.

I know! The food prices are ridiculous! For a while, me and my husband shopped at Pathmark, but they merged with A&P, and the prices skyrocketed. Then we switched to Wal-Mart, which has a decent selection at reasonable prices. The other day, I went there to pick up a gallon of milk, which used to be only like $3.59, and it was raised to $4.01. Right now, we are using Shoprite, as they seem to have the best selection and good sales. But just for the two us, it's about $150 every week and half or so. CRAZY!

ya we keep trying to find the cheaper. we use coupons and keep some money put away for when see a sale for something that we like to buy. save alot is a good store but doesnt sell everything that we like so we buy what we can there.

I agree with all of you.  The cost of food has totally went crazy.  I buy alot of store brand foods to save a little, but it always doesnt help much.  The cost of dairy and meat are out of hand.  Its seems like everytime I go to store the prices have went up.  I live on a very limited income, so therefore I have very little to spend on food.  I try to get by on about 200 a month, but it is getting harder to do.  I have cut out alot of extras and only buy the necessities.  It needs to stop or alot more people will be going hungry.

Prices are higher because the dollar has been devalued and so now it takes more dollars to purchase something.  :'(

I agree completely! I used to shop exclusively at one supermarket, but I've now realized that certain products are significantly cheaper elsewhere and as long as I'm not running around all over the place too much and wasting gas, I will now shop other places too. It's crazy! I only buy milk at Costco because it is over a dollar cheaper than my supermarket or Target and we go through 3 gallons a week. I've thought of rationing my kids' milk intake that's how bad it is!

The rise in prices of foods and staples has been gradually rising over the past year. It's called inflation when your dollar is devalued and doesn't buy as much as prices rise. Their may be some price increases due to weather conditions that cause a crop to dwindle in amount and therefore cost more for what crop there is available to market--coffee beans and citrus fruits come to mind.
It takes quite awhile for the above circumstances to reverse themselves . Some people don't realize what's happening until they feel the pinch in their pocket book. One solution is to use more locally produced products. They are not only healthier but you get more for your money because the middle man and shipping costs are cut. Go to your farmers markets, support the local economy and spend your dollars wisely. I think we will see this trend of locally produced meat, vegetables and fruit continue. In the summer when fruits and vegetables are most plentiful and not so expensive buy in quantity and freeze or can them for later in the year.

I noticed it most in dairy. Yogurt has gone way up in price. And the oatmeal I eat has gone up 50% in the last year. But for the most part, it is not totally wrecking my food budget.
