This is exactly why I became intrigued with couponing and started a couponing blog.  I am here to tell you that it really does work and you can easily save 40-50% or more from your monthly grocery budget.  Does it take a little time and effort? Yes, but it is a lot easier to do a few little things than it is to get a raise and there are lots of short cuts.  It is also something you can start doing right away and it doesn't typically cost anything.

On my blog I go through the sale papers and see what is on sale.  Then I locate the coupons that are available either from the Sunday newspaper inserts or printable or even some eCoupon sites.  I publish the "matchups" so that people can easily see what they need and how to save on those items.  When you match these up it is astonishing how much you can save.  Especially when stores double coupons or they have Buy One, Get One Free sales.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need tons of coupons to save.  I get my parent's Sunday inserts and I either buy 1 Sunday paper for myself, or I order coupon inserts online for about $1 a piece.  I have a family of 2, so I usually only require about 2 copies of each weekly insert to score big savings.  I don't dive in dumpsters or buy 12 newspapers a week.  That is not practical.

Also, do not overlook the drug stores like CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid that offer cash off your next purchase coupons for the purchase of certain items.  Each week I buy things I need that are on sale, use coupons to reduce the price further and get coupons for money off for the next week.  It is not uncommon for me to save 90% on a drug store shopping trip.

Sorry to go on and on, but I hate to see anyone paying top dollar for groceries and items their families need whether they can afford to or not.  You just don't have to.

I agree.  I get a shock every time I walk into a grocery store.  And like one person said, most things have been going up consistently over the years.  I guess we notice it more when a particular item has a drastic price hike.

In the last month everything seems to have risen dramatically.  It is caused by the devalued dollar so it will continue to get worse and worse.

It has gotten way out of hand. The average person cannot buy everything they need. But those on welfare have it made. Chaps my behind. And i know the farmers are not getting any of the high cost. It all goes to the middleman. Of course most of them are unions. My brother is a farmer and between the cost of fuel, seed, and haveing to pay a water assesment even when they aren't getting any water, they just barely make it. What is this world, or the USA anyway comming too. But the govt. can send bullions overseas for what. They need to take care of our country here first.
I live in a small town with 1 grocery store and believe me they gouge the heck out of us and then cry that people are going out of town instead of supporting them, I travel at least 80 miles one way to buy groceries once a month. Buy for 3  families. But Walmart is starting to increase their cost a lot too. Who knows may have to travel another extra 30 miles one way and go out of state to Sams soon.

As gas prices goes up, so do food prices.  Expect food prices to go even higher, when gas prices are expect to go over $4 a gallon by summer time.

ces are going up everywhere! We go without as well we try to eat one balance meal a day.  It having one makes it ruff I know there is government help which I have but that is what the help gives us if we didn't have it we might only be able to eat once or twice a week so I feel lucky.  With rent and electric and only one income it ruff

Hate to be the one to bring you more bad news.  But because of the recent drought you can pretty much count on the prices of food products going up until the end of next summer and that is if we get some drought busting rain in the areas that are growing the food products.

Samrhett,

I thought I'd second your post. I stumbled upon a site like yours(or maybe yours!) about 2yrs ago and only started to play with coupons because I couldn't believe the claims. As a single guy I easily save $500-$700/yr. I've taught 2 of my sisters who have kids and I've no doubt they are saving more. I spend 30min tops a week. I may not be familiar with your site but you and others like you do a great service, thanks.

I started using coupons and that seems to help. Will keep using them. Thankfully I have three stores near where I live that are right around the corner from each other. I look through their circulars and go where the sales are. It takes a little time planning, but for me it is worth it.

I can't stress enough the need to visit a blog like the one mentioned by Samrhett earlier. You file the Smartsource And Redplum flyers by week, and the folks on the blog match sales with coupons. They list them by store every week. The system they taught me has led me to having price levels above which I won't buy things. I haven't paid $1 for a can of name brand soup in along time. I doubt I will ever pay for anything but the taxes on toothpaste again. And I'm stocked up on basics more than I ever was. As was mentioned earlier the drug stores can be great by "rolling over" their "$ off your next trip" deals.

Just wanted to say that I went to CVS the other day and used only one coupon. The other things I bought were on sale. When the cashier handed me my long receipt, there were four different coupons on it, including two for money off my total purchase for my next visit. Will be using all of them soon. Gotta love savings! ;D

Way to go!  It pays to look through those fliers even if you don't use coupons you can still see what items will yield you money back coupons.

Thanks for comments about my blog and others like it being helpful.  If we wait for someone to make our situation better, I think we will be waiting a long time, so instead we need to get creative and take matters into our own hands.

There is also an organization called Angel Food Ministries.  I checked it out and can get better deals on what I want with coupons, but some people find it really helpful.  They provide food in bulk at very low prices and they deliver them once a month to area churches or community centers.  Anyone having a hard time affording food, can check them out as well.

I've got plans for the garden this spring. Hopefully we can grow/can most of our own veggies and some fruit this year.

I've just recently begun using coupons and although I probably haven't saved 50% on groceries yet, I am on my way.  It's a new way to shop.  I only buy stuff that is on sale and match with coupons that I have.  We had a free dinner the other night from Dunkin Donuts.  I had 4 coupons for a free deli sandwich.   It's really fun when you get a good coupon and sale.
