Why do people celebated holidays?

I feel holidays were added to our calendars to give people something to look forward to year after year. what do you think?

I would like to know the reason too. Do we really need a Valentine's day?

I believe holidays are for remembering and celebrating a significant event in the history of a community or culture. Happy Valentine's Day!

I hate small and commercial holidays. I think holidays should be about spending time with your family and friends.

Holidays are mostly religious celebrations.

To be with family and every different religion has thier own interpertation of the holidays and its a way to express that

Most of our holiday are religious holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.  Others are Presidental or Country related 4th of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day.  Others are just significant dates Martin Luther King day, Valentines day, New Years etc.

Holidays are often nice to look forward to as I get to see extended family during these times and sometimes vacation from work. I do fall victim to the commercial aspects of some of these celebrations, but I'm not very religious either so I don't mind too much.
