Cat Litter free with rebate...
« on: March 26, 2012, 04:32:01 pm »
I was just curious if anyone has tried the NEW Arm & Hammer "Ultra Last" cat litter that comes with a rebate sticker on the box (making the litter free after rebate) ?

I don't use clumping litter as a rule and haven't ever tried a scented litter before.  This was a 20 lb. box for free so I thought I'd give it a try...

At first, the scent was really good...made the whole house smell good.  Things took a turn for the worse very quickly.  The scent became so strong that I had to have the windows open, and I still got strange headaches.  The kittens reek of the scent.  I was in my car and could smell the scent on my jacket which had previously been hung up in a closet away from the litter-box room.

I didn't realize right away how much of a problem the litter was causing, unfortunately the stuff has been in the house for a little over three weeks.  Both kittens have stopped eating, they both refused to use the litter pan containing this litter and went back to using a second pan with their original "litter" in it.  One kitten has had an earache, the other is wheezing & sneezing.  Both were fine before this litter was used.

I came home from work yesterday and as I put the key in the door...I could smell the Arm & Hammer inside the house just standing on the porch, it's THAT strong.

I haven't been feeling well and my neck is swollen, lymph glands are swollen, earaches in both ears.  I've had a burning sensation in my nose all day and realized ALL the problems started when I brought this new litter home.  I'm so sorry I put my pets through this ordeal...

I bagged all the litter up and it's outside in the trash for tomorrow's pick-up.  Things should get back to better soon.

This might be good stuff for some...it doesn't get a "paws up" here.   :angry7:

I have never tried that paticular cat litter before but you are supose to clean it out several times a day for it to really work right.  My mother uses the clumping catlitter but she takes the clumps out everytime she goes near the kitty box.

I have not used that particular cat litter but, I also use the type that clumps. It seems to make it easier to remove without removing all of the litter. I also keep it pretty much remove anything as the kittly box is used.

i just bought a bag of this stuff because i really
like the arm & hammer brand, but i'm always looking
for longer lasting and noticed the 'ultra last' which is
newer. mine isn't super super strong or anything.
i only have 1 cat and she doesn't seem to mind it...
she does smell like it though, but that's okay since
it reminds me of laundry.

that stinks though... literally  :sad1:
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

I love Arm & Hammer baking soda  and used to love their Pet Fresh carpet/ room sprinkle (but don't use that one as much anymore), so I just wanted to point out that I'm not just complaining on the "brand".

I've always changed the litter box multiple times a day, cats should never have to deal with a dirty box.  One of the first things I bought the kittens after adopting them was a  PetSmart Martha Stewart stainless steel litter box (because stainless doesn't absorb odors like plastic can).  I don't use any chemicals when cleaning anymore, I use a Shark steamer and it works extremely well on their stainless pan...disinfects chemically-free.  I try to buy everything fragrance-free, even the dishsoap.  Maybe that is why all the pets & myself are so "scent-sensitive"???

I couldn't stand the smell of litter left on the kittens, so they got baths yesterday.  ("Tuna" gave me a partial "black-eye", he doesn't like water on his back...(lol).)  That's when I discovered "Tuna" has a minor eye infection.  I had noticed his eyes had been "running" after the new cat litter had been in the box for a few days, I had just assumed he had "outdoor allergies" from sitting in the window.  The build-up of "goop" has caused a minor infection.  He has stopped sneezing though and seems to be feeling a little better, he doesn't have much of an appetite but he did eat a few bites today.  "Sammy" is also eating a little and his earache seems to be gone.  The dog's eyes have stopped "running" and she's eating and her eyes look "happy" again---and not like she has a "headache".  My nose is still burning, it's very aggravating.  The lymph gland swelling seems to be going down a little, the headaches are gone and I feel a little better.  I'm so "bummed" because I did like the scent of the litter the first day and the litter did seem to work really well.  The "ultra scent" was just too strong.

I found a couple of sites with reviews (not on the "Ultra" litter) on other Arm & Hammer cat litters...I thought they were interesting.   **This site has reviews on several different cat litters.   * http://www.cat-litter-critic.com/arm-and-hammer-cat-litter.html
