garage sale rules
« on: April 03, 2012, 10:03:24 am »
some idiot came to our garage sale with his kid and my fiance was telling him we will have new stuff every weekend and the dude said your lucky you're not in rockford coz after so many garage sales it's considered a business and u will get fined. F U BUDDY! we already checked on the rules and we are fine. we can have as many as we want with no consequences. that really pissed off my fiance and he was pissed off the whole rest of the day because of the dude. i dont care if he's from 2 towns over, not every town is the same. i told my fiance that that was the first time i have ever seen him come to our garage sale so he will never know we have garage sales. i swore he was from the flea market 2 towns over too. oh well, i dont think i will ever see him at our garage sale again so i told my fiance not to worry about it but he does. so, out of spite he checked online again and it only talked about signs and thats it so that dude doesnt know what he's talking about.

Lots of towns have different rules for garage sales. I was having a garage sale once and a friend of my aunts told me that in his town they did not allow people to put up signs.

I live in Illinois, it was supposed to be super nice so I planned a garage sale, both days IT was freezing!!!  I made 25 bucks :(
I think there is a rule about posting signs on certain poles but nobody enforces it.

Where I live signs are not suppose to be on post or polls which of course everyone does but the town I live in we must have a permit which yes cost and it must be posted where it can be seen with the dates of the days in which you are having the sale if its not posted and a police man stops by huge fine!!!!! We don't have many yard sales its a pain!

Those rules are JUST for the town to make money, It's not like your going to make tons of money, garage sales date back to.. well its like tradition and that saying, " one person's junk is another's treasure " SO TRUE! Around my county we have TOWN wide garage sales all the time and another they call Route 34 or something because it runs so long through so many towns in our county. People should (lawmaking money sucking ...) should lighten up and realize uh HELLO RECESSION people need extra money especially right now.  >:(

The only rule I know of is posting signs you could get fined for that, or have a ticket delivered to your address.
If you have any worries or concerns I'd say contact your neighborhood police precinct for more information.

In our little town you are considered a business if you have garage sales every week-end and I do know of a few people who tried that but did not get away with it for long.  I know you can't always make a bunch of money with a garage sale but I do think it is not right for someone to have them every week-end and junk up their yards with stuff that didn't sell and then pile more stuff on top of it.  I used to have a garage sale every spring and again every fall and made fairly decent money with it but I would never consider it all the time for several different reasons.  You are also susposed to go get all your signs down or you are subject to a fine but I see old signs all the time and its not like they wouldn't know who left them there if they wanted to fine them.  lol

It sounds like the guy who bothered you was just trying to stir up some stuff.  It's good you know enough about it that it doesn't bother you...

Here in the Southern California desert area they have strict rules on yard and garage sales and I think you can not have them more than every 90 days.  But as others have posted, I guess you need to check with your local police or code enforcement officer. :crybaby2:

The person's approach might have been wrong, but his intentions could have been good.  In New Orleans, (or at least Jefferson Parish) you can only have 2 per year at the same address.  You also have to get a permit first, so they can track it- for the exact reasons he said, it is considered to be a business and need to apply for a license that way if it is more.  They do enforce it and there can be hefty fines.  I'm glad your town doesn't do that, but coming from a place that does, my first thought might have been the same as his!

It is an absolutely great way to make ends meet!  I have sales, too! But, if I have more than 2 in a year, I have to do it at someone else's house.  I wish that rule didn't exist here, but since it does, we have to work within the laws!
