My daughter has no phone.  At home she tries to live on FB.  Why do so many parents give there kids phones any.  I grew up without a cell how did I make it?  When you are broke like I am, your kids don't get anything.  Too much value is placed on technology.  A boy in Asia sold is kidney on the black market for about $1000 American dollars.  The kid wound up sick and has renal failure.

I think it is a step in the dumbing down of socialization in society. The art of face to face or even phone contact is becoming as extinct as the art of cursive script and letter writing.
We will all be educated on facts and figures, but will not know how to interact with one another.

Kids today will be saying "Kids Today..." when they're no longer kids themselves.

This is a generation of multitasking and distractions. The traditional classroom may just not hold up in the demands of the world today where you need to do everything and be everywhere at once. Kids have always done things to pass the time or keep themselves occupied whether it was doodling in a notebook, texting or handing note to each other under the desk. Texting is no different. Just because students use these tools to keep themselves awake or socializing doesn't mean they don't learn or that these tasks are inherently bad. Not all students learn the same way and it is foolish to try and teach students in a purely lecture based format. Students need to be engaged to learn some learn better different ways and it should be a teachers job to find ways to reach each student in their class in some way.

A lot of people think I'm too tough.  But when my daughter gets complimented on her impeccable manners, I don't care what anyone says.  But I'm old fashioned despite the fact that I'm only 28.  I believe in spanking because I think kids should have some fear of consequences.  A spanking isn't dangerous or detrimental to their health and no one can convince me otherwise.  As long as you know the difference between discipline and abuse, I see nothing wrong with a swat on the butt.  I won't spank when I'm angry, just because I don't ever want to have anger spill into the discipline part.  I can't say that I don't yell when I'm angry though lol

Not meaning to step on any toes, but a fair amount of the problem lies with the parent. Moms and Dads are busy I admit, time needs to be set aside to teach, train and show our kids how much we love them; otherwise, they will react by doing things to get our attention that probably want be in their best interest.

I think with such a monumental task, teachers should be the best paid people on the planet!

I am pretty sure that they will finally out grow the habbit eventually. As long as they are not addictive this is not that bad. I think parents should supervise as well.

Technology and its advances. They are great but there should be limits. Cell phones are the cause of many automobile deaths. I've almost be hit a few times by other drives using the cell phone and not looking at the road. I thought there was a law pasted for this? :crybaby2:

Why do kids today value texting over education? They have little to no desire to learn. Who is to blame?

THE PARENTS ARE TO BLAME

Spoken like a kid shifting the blame.

Right on the money Falcon . I know,(indeed I have) siblings that are all over the board on respect and education. And there are many kids doing great things today.A little patience and understanding goes a long way, and a smile instead of a suspicious frown can expose one to a whole generation of great kids.

Anyone who has had kids has seen that 'blame-shifting' they do at least once.  Sometimes this behaviour is corrected and sometimes those kids 'grow up'/get older and still engage in it.

A little patience and understanding goes a long way, and a smile instead of a suspicious frown can expose one to a whole generation of great kids.

We may have different ideas on what's considered "a little patience and understanding" since I've observed that it often takes an enormous amount of both in regards to some kids and some adults. Although I do know that 'exposing onself to a whole generation of great kids' is generally frowned-upon as lewd behaviour, I hope you know this was a play on your words and nothing more.

Maybe because of technology and lousy parenting. Back then before technology got too convenient, i.e texting, facebook, etc. Kids would have been more productive, seeing what today can do distract you.

Kids have always found ways, with or without technology, to be unproductive.  If I recall correctly, it used to be known as "playing outside."
