Kids today...

Why do kids today value texting over education? They have little to no desire to learn. Who is to blame?

Kids today are saints compared to the kids years ago. I just got done reading a book about kids who grew up in the 20s. All they did was kick the crap out of each other from kindergarden on up. I think I rather my kids text all day instead of fighting with other kids all the time.

I would rather they weren't alowed to text during school. They are suppose to be leaning something. In our schools if they are caught texting their phone is taken away until school lets out. The sad part of all of this is if they don't learn anything it is the teachers fault. What a crock. The parnets try to control this but it has gotten out of hand. We all lived without texting and our grades were so much better in school. My hubby teaches ( sub) in middle school and high school, and says it is awful. kids would rather be texting instead of learning.

That's a broad statement and does not apply to the ones I know. If you are talking about kids having cell phones in class, our schools do NOT allow them and if your schools do, the 'blame' is on the Board of Education and their lax rules.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was using texting as an example of what kids value over learning. It could be anything. Our schools do not allow them either, but dont think that they aren't there! Like the days when I was young and we werent allowed to chew gum in school... how did all that gum get under the desks?

I guess I just dont understand why kids dont understand the importance of learning. They could care less if they are dumb.

THE PARENTS ARE TO BLAME

Spoken like a kid shifting the blame.
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

Spoken like an 'adult' with no kids/no reference. Spoken like someone who was too busy texting during computer class and never learned HOW TO STOP BEING RUDE BY POSTING IN ALL CAPS. Spoken like someone who is unwilling to accept responsibility for their own actions and still blaming his/her parents for all things wrong in their [adult] life.

even if the kids aren't allowed to text in class, they do still do it.

a good way to fix this problem is to beat the crap out of the kid like in the old days. Definitely works better than just taking it away. Unless you use some type of force or scare tactic, kids won't give a *bleep*.

Personally, I think it is childish to use the word 'blame' because it implies that there is only one reason for a problem. Kids today are not really that much different than they were when I was in school 25 -30 years ago. There are always those kids that are there to learn; those who are there to socialize; and those that in the middle. Doesn't anybody remember passing written notes? I passed notes and made friendship bracelets during Junior and High school and still managed to be in the top 20% of the graduating class.
I don't think that lack of focus (ie. doing other things in class) has a clear connection with failure rates.
Education is everyones job; from the child up.

Not all text all the time- for those that do, I think it is pretty much the modern version of passing notes. Kids have pretty much always found distractions- they'll be alright.
