My kids internalize and try not to let the opponents see that their feathers have been ruffled. This is surprising considering the garbage music that they listen to(guess I am getting old). My wife and I are both Athletes and I would like to think that I brought our children up right.  My kids weren't allowed to use words like fat or stupid, when they were growing up, when describing people...there really is no place for those words as they are only hurtful. I think that teaching them that seemingly innocent words can be insensitive they have graduated to a point where they don't use harsher words.  We have taught them that using language like this is just a sign of a lower class up bringing.

You must not have been around many 'impolite' military personnel from before the 50's through the present time, for example.  There's a basis for the phrase, "cussing like a sailor", (which was not restricted to the navy).  Up until the late 70's, "foul language" was an accepted training tool in boots camps across the services.  After the early 80's, drill instructors who were used to that 'tool' sometimes struggled to not employ it, (apparently, someone's mother complained to a congressman about it or something along those lines).  The rationale for 'cussing' went along the lines of, 'if you can't take a few colorful metaphors, what are you going to do when the bullets start flying - cry?'
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.
