One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

Thanks a good one! I think it is despicable that so many americans can't speak or write properly. From what I've seen, America seems to be declining into illiteracy. I work at a place that requires passing a test to get hired, so you'd think that most of the employees would be able to spell proberly and use proper grammer, but that isn't the case! I can only imagine what the so-called English of the ones that fail the test must be like!

Having studied a few languages, I would say that it's not the language itself that is inherently difficult to learn, no matter what the language.  Rather it depends on two factors - level of immersion (constantly studying and speaking the language) and the teacher.  I've learned Ancient Greek and Hebrew, and both have their areas of difficulties.

Agreed! Just look at some of the posts on this Forum. Not that everything needs to be perfect but some people can't spell simple words and by the sentence structure, it's not just a typo. English, IMHO, is very difficult because of all the idioms and the slang.

German was my fourth language and it was not as difficult as English.  I have a very good life, thank you!  Sympathy for people? I have sympathy for people when it is warranted.  If someone loses a loved one or is having a difficult time, then I express my sympathy. A bully I would be if I attacked an individual.  My comment above was a general observation about illiteracy and does not deserve any sympathy. This is a forum and in as much, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

??? Don't know, I speak Spanish and English, but I think that's all I need because most people where I live only speak English and Spanish.  I need to teach my son Spanish.

Any language that isn't latin based is hard for americans. I think it is funny though that a lot of british make fun of americans for not speaking proper english when most of them don't anyways.

If you spend any time travelling around Great Britain you'll note that they probably have more accents than people around the US, however, they seldom make fun of people who speak with an American accent.  The Brits are generally a very friendly and well mannered people.

Naturally, such does not apply to Wales, (since the Welsh do not consider themselves to be "Brits" ... although it has been speculated before that the Welsh decend from the Picts  :o ).
