New to motherhood
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:08:24 am »
I am 24 weeks; 6 months pregnant and will be expecting my little princess on September 10. I'm new to motherhood and would appreciate any tips from experienced mothers whether its regarding tips for the labor, the rest of my pregnancy, or for when she's a newborn. Anything is greatly appreciated  :)

I had my daughter a long time ago (almost 37 years), and now so much that I went through is outdated, especially furniture and toys.  But I do have a 4-year-old grandson, and I went through much of his babyhood with his mother.  The main thing to remember is to expect the unexpected. All pregnancies and newborns are a little different.  However, find one of the websites that follows the experience through newborns to 3 or 4 years.   It will give you a general idea of what generally to expect at certain ages, height, weight, etc.  Find a good pediatrician and also someone or more than one person to help you from time to time.  Taking care of newborns can be a little over-whelming.  And good luck.  There is nothing more precious than a child or more important than the responsibility of raising that child.

Congratulations, mom-to-be!  I'm happy for you and your little princess!  I'll share with you what was shared with me about taking the time to enjoy little precious wee one:

            Song for a Fifth Child

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
hang out the washing and butter the bread,
sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
but I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
for children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

My children are 7 and 10 and the best advice I can give you is do what you feel is best for your own child!  Every mother has her own way of raising her babies.  Although you are a new mom you will know how to take care of your baby!  People will give or tell you all sorts of ways on how to raise your child BUT always follow your heart on what you think and feel is best!!

Congrats!! Being a MOM is the best job in this world!!

Congratulations mom to be!!  I will tell you this - you will find a zillion women willing to tell you labor and delivery horror stories. Ignore them, tell them to stop before they even finish their stories, no need to scare you. Labor isn't easy but I was 40, overweight and out of shape, and it took just 1 push.  So remember that. Everyone's pregnancy/delivery/child is different. Follow your instincts and your heart, you know your child better than anyone. No two children are alike so what worked for one person may not work for you. You'll be a great mom, daughters are wonderful. The night before I gave birth I was worried that I didn't have the strong maternal instinct that some of my friends and relatives had, but the moment she entered this world I knew a love stronger than I could imagine and knew that both of our lives were just beginning. You're about to begin the best part of your life!!

You will make yourself crazy reading all the experts, especially when they contradict each other.  Read them then apply commonsense and try stuff to find what works best for you and your baby.  Babies are all different; what worked for my son didn't always work for my daughter.

Sleep when you have the chance. Some days that means the carpet won't get vacumned, but so what?

They aren't quite as fragile as we fear.  Have fun.  Baby days will be over before you know it (though at 4 am that can be hard to believe).  I have teenagers now but miss those babies still some days.

Just wait until the first day you realize your baby is really smiling at you.

I bet you are going to be a great mom!

In my opinion, I believe any new mom should have baby fingernail clippers on hand.  After your newborn arrives, you will notice how quickly her fingernails will grow.  When she rubs her face, she may accidently scratch herself in the face.
