Why'd you use the Joint Account?!
« on: June 02, 2012, 04:48:36 pm »
So many people handle their finances differently. Some have a joint account, some have separate accounts and each put a set amount into their joint and others prefer to remain separated. Personally whats mine is mine and yours is mine haha kidding kidding but in all seriousness so many couples fight when it comes down to that joint account.

What is your situation? If you are a joint holder what is your biggest fight usually about?

We keep things separate, pay our individual bills (student loans, credit cards) because hey it is our debt not the other persons and then break down the bills as we see fit and it works fine for us. If we've gotten into any financial argument it has been more about who has taken the brunt of grocery or baby items.

We've done much the same as in your situation, with the stipulation that shared bills are paid 50/50.  In practicality, what usually happens is that funds get expended on non-recurring expenses at disproportionate rates anyway, (e.g., one of us just bought dinner and the other picked up milk on the way home ... not exactly proportionate expenditures but, she's human and beloved nonetheless).
 :-X  :-)
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

And how are you planning for the future ? Is there separate accounts for that as well ? And since you obviously have a child how are you handling savings for the child?

We each have our own savings accounts (mine, his, sons), we each have life insurance policies (mine, his, sons), two properties (mine - used as a rental, his - our primary home) and for my part I have a two other investment accounts.

See, now that's the great thing about always being broke. There's never any money to fight over! :)

Seriously though, we've had one joint account for over 12 years now and thankfully, money isn't something we've ever fought over. We've got a budget and we pretty much stick to it. Before the economy tanked, back when we had some disposable income, we did have earmarked sort of a "his and hers entertainment" budget each month, just for things like going out to eat with friends, buying magazines or video games, etc.

Call me old fashioned....we have joint accounts.  We both work.  Money goes to same account.  We both spend it.  We talk about big purchases together and decide together.
It has worked very well for us for 35+ years.

my hubby and i have a joint account...for the simple reason that he is HORRIBLE with money, so his paycheck goes into the account, I pay the bills then we decide what the rest is needed for after.  if we didnt do it that way, we'd be drowning in debt lol.

I love this idea!  I tell my girlfriend that I don't ever want to have a joint account. Her bills are hers, and mine are mine. I wouldn't ever want to have money taken from the account because of something dumb I did.

It is good to have a joint account that way you know what the other is doing with the household money.

I certainly wasn't taught that. My mom works. Both of my grandmothers worked. I was actually taught to have some well worth and no rely on others to take care of you
