I agree that people should work for their money, but I also agree that welfare should be available to those who need it. And I don't believe that there are jobs anywhere anymore and I am sorry but I cant accept 7.25 an hour when that wouldn't even cover the cost of the gas in my car to get to work. I have been out of work since April. I moved to be with my husband and now we live off his VA check and we get food stamps. If it weren't for those food stamps we would go hungry, and we only get 50 bucks a month from them. But every little bit helps.  I am excited that I do have an interview tomorrow for what could be the best job ever! But when you live 20 miles from the nearest little town and 40 miles from a city, 7.25/hr wont cut it to get me to and from work. So I think that yes people should work for their money but I still think people who need assistance, like me and my husband, should be able to get it.

I believe Welfare was originally set up to be very helpful for people/families that were truly in need.  However, just like everything else it has gotten abused and people are taking way to much advantage of it and unfortunately there are guidelines that have to be followed but everybody just knows ways around those guidelines.  I believe that changes are coming for the welfare program because the states are not going to be able to continue to pay out the millions that go into that program.  I think rules should be stricter, and yes....if you need welfare you shouldn't be able to be buying drugs..so its the dual edge cause the drug testing will cost the states more, and what will be the true punishment for it?  My thought are is it going to cost more for a temporary "punishment" or will it be a permenant 1 time offense you won't receive them ever??

It should only be enough to get you back on your feet. There should be a limit of time and I also agree to drug testing. I also feel if they can afford tatoos, cigarettes or alcohol they dont need welfare.  Why should we have to pay for their habits.

I believe welfare should be reserved for only those who are completely incapable of holding down a job.  What disgusts me the most is something that a patient once told the doctor I worked for when he asked what she did for a living - "I have babies for the government."

You don't work FOR welfare, you work FOR wages (as many people before me have stared)
Welfare should be a supplementary income, to help those that cannot afford to live on their wages alone.
Unfortunately, there is a good amount of people that abuse the system to get all the welfare money that they can without working any more.
Not everyone is like that, and a lot of people really do need the added assistance. That's fine, that's what it's there for.

Work for it of course. Nothing in life is FREE.
I think the word 'entitlement' needs to be changed back to welfare.
'Entitlement' makes it sound like it is 'due' to you.
The only thing you are entitled to is your opinions and beliefs.

You should not have to work in order to get welfare benefits. If you need assistance until you get on your feet, then you need assistance. As long as you are not using the system.

The concept of "work for welfare" also includes actively making attempts to find employment. It's really not asking much to require someone to apply for a certain of amount of companies before they receive any benefits. If the view of being on welfare is temporary, this is something they would already be doing.

I will say one thing, they need to recalculate who gets what because we were getting like $300 in food stamps...I needed it because of the debt payments I was making monthly, but if I didn't have debt I would have had enough money for groceries so they need to lower the amount of money, like we were making 2700 a month...they should be giving $300 to someone who's making more along the lines of 1700 a month or something, sheesh...and drug testing, yes yes yes!!!!

do you think we should work for welfare or just recieve it

Quite an interesting question :icon_rr:

I'm tending to lean towards YES! Don't misunderstand me, yes there are individuals who whould say no but, if think about it.....How much better would the(your) City/State be? Let me put down what i'm thinking......   Working to receive not only benefitsbut, also a better place to live. There are roughly 30 million welfare receipient in the US if not more. Imagine the turn-around. More and more people would began to respect where they live, how they live and, how to live with one another. What a better world this would be!!!!!

Again, Very Interesting Question my Friend...

i know it is tough for people with the economic situation such as it is. For this reason i understand some people have to be on welfare or unemployment. This is a small way to help people survive

If you are able bodied, I think a person should work.  But with the economy in the dumpster, where can they find jobs to help supplement the welfare they are receiving?  I am sure people would rather work than get welfare.

If you work then you get paid from your job and therefore wouldn't need welfare.  I disagree with welfare altogether.  Too many people are just drawing a check and refusing to work.  It's not right to take money from the person who works and give it to a person who refuses to work.  I also think ALL welfare receipents should be drug tested. If I have to be drug tested to work for the money they should have to be drug tested to receive it.  JMO.

I agree 100% that drug testing should be in place for those receiving welfare.  As far as "mooching of the system" there are plenty that do so...however there are plenty of others that do work and receive assistance.  Whether it be through cash or food assistance.  There are unforeseen circumstances that force people to get some help.
