Are manners a thing of the past?
« on: September 04, 2012, 05:53:30 pm »
Are you tired of dealing with people who have no manners? are rude and inconsiderate?

A few examples:
Loud cell phone talkers in restaurants, lines, etc.
Drivers who pull out in front of you that obviously paid no attention, were distracted, etc.
Drivers who block the left lane (fast lane) going well under the speed limit.
Neighbors who do nothing about their dogs constant barking despite being asked politely.
People who do not acknowledge you when you politely hold the door for them.
Shoppers whose carts completely block aisles.

:( Yes, unfortunately I believe manners are becoming a thing of the past...seems like people just are in a rush and don't want to take the time to be polite.  When I was a child my dad told me when you drive never fail to throw your hand up when someone lets you in....that is thanking them for putting someone else b4 them.  And as I got older I noticed a lot of people did that, now hardly anyone does and further hardly anyone will let you in lol.  This is going to be a long post but its odd that I came in here because tonight at the grocery a very elegant (rich) looking woman was in front of me, when she finished putting her items on the counter she turned around and started putting mine up there, I told her what a kind thing to do and she said no its nothing really.  That left a lasting impression on me and I hope that I can do something tomorrow that is both polite and kind.

No I don't think manners are a thing of the past.
I think many people forget to acknowledge common daily manners.
Please and thank you still go a long way in my book.

Yes I think they are.  People have no respect or consideration for anyone else any more.

Good manners should be a part of daily life, it's a shame that the majority of people I come in contact with don't know a thing about good manners  :dontknow:

I don't think manners are the problem here but more of common courtesty as folks become more and more selfish.   I used to have a running debate with a co worker at work over will the southern gentelman survive as we observed the masses of people in a large metroplitan city we never reached a consenses but concluded that they were definately a minority in this southern city.

I think it depends.  Some people don't care and will do whatever they want.  There are some people though who will attempt to have some manners.

They decided to do construction on the one road we have through town here, so that has made this summer hectic.  With no center lane any more, making a left turn will stop traffic for a while until there is a break.  Most people will just keep driving through, which I can understand since sometimes you figure they'll be able to turn later.  We are a small town after all so there isn't a ton of traffic.  Now, when there is a backup, you can't go more than a car's length forward, and you don't let someone through, then yeah, I think they should let the car through and a lot of times they didn't.

I also see a lot of people at my job who will complain about the cost of a game of mini golf, and then use the clubs as hammers, pogo sticks, tightropes, canes, etc.  I once had a kid hit one of the clubs so hard against (I assume) a tree that it snapped the neck.  Not exactly a manners things, but definitely they aren't respecting another's item.  Customers bug me a lot since they seem to think they can demand whatever they want and the employees must give it to them.

Then again, there are people who attempt to have some manners.  Not exactly a fair assessment, but I would drive through town a little slower since there was so much stopping.  By doing that, I'd create a gap between me and the car in front of me which people could use to pull out or turn.  Or, if I was stopped, I'd try to avoid blocking driveways so people could still turn while I sat there.  From another person's perspective though, they could think I don't have manners though cause I'm going 25 in a 35 zone.  Or cause they want to make a right turn in the driveway that I'm trying not to block.  I will also hit a point where I've waved the person through so many times and they haven't gone yet, that I'll just pull through because my lane is moving again.  Personally I can't think of anything good that has happened to me recently, so can't comment on another's behavior, but I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Well, to me that seems more like a lack of common sense than an issue with manners.

I feel like just because someone else is rude or obnoxious doesn't mean I have to be so too. :dontknow: :dontknow:  In fact when people are really bad about it I am extra polite and use extra good manners.  :angel12: :angel12: Sometimes this will make them stop and think, when they realize what has happened they will behave better.  Please and thank you go a long way in my book.    I agree to that sometimes manners are just plain common sense.  Does it really take that long to hold a door open for someone who needs a little help (handicapped, has small children with them,  hands are full?).  I guess I also agree with Pay It Forward be kind to people.  Treat them as you wish to be treated.

I remember when manners were very important. Nowadays not much attention is given to manners.  People who dont have them seem to be more popular than those that do.  Personally, I always practice good manners because it is just my nature and a result of my Midwestern upbringing and it is always refreshing when I meet others that do too.

I think manners are becoming a thing of the past. It is so sad that people to can't even greet or treat others with common courtesy but for those that do know manners that's is awesome!

yes, manners is a thing of the past, especially with the younger generation. When you say hello or good morning, most times you get a sour puss face, and sometimes they look at you as if you are crazy!!!!
