This may be news for some of you, but you can't find any authentic Italian food in the US, like they have all over Italy. It's very hard to find a carpaccio here, although it's possible. I've never seen spaghetti aglio e olio on any menu, neither a spaghetti puttanesca, spaghetti al tonno or spaghetti frutti di mari. On the other hand, you have spaghetti with meatballs. People in Italy don't know what that is, they eat a great variety of spaghetti and they do eat meatballs, but they never combine the two. Spaghetti carbonara is offered on some menus, but it's completely different from what you routinely get anywhere in Italia. Don't even ask me about pizza, people in Italia would be absolutely offended if you offered them a Domino's pizza, or most other varieties of so called "pizza" that you produce here in the US. They also don't know what a Stromboli is, it's another American invention. For the Italians, Stromboli is one of the islands in the group of volcanic Aeolian islands just north of Sicilia (Sicily), a beautiful group of islands to visit, I highly recommend a visit to Lipari, if you ever happen to be in that area, and they serve some of the best food you can find anywhere in Italia, they have buffets at a variety of restaurants all over the island, get the antipasto frutti di mari, the buffet will be enough for a meal, I never needed the primi piatti or the secondo piatti. Just like anywhere else in Italia, the house wines are always excellent, you don't have to spend extra money on a bottle, the local vintners deliver excellent house wines to restaurants in barrels, I've never been disappointed by any house wine, red or white, anywhere in Italia.
Are there any native Italians, or others who have spent enough time in Italia, who might have any views on this subject?
