I was also raised to tell the truth even when the truth is bad.  Honesty is always the best policy.

Many of them lie because they're xtians and used to lying to themselves.
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

People lie because they are afraid to face the truth and the consequences that follow. Im speaking from experience. Some people say they want to hear the truth of a story but when you tell them they cant handle. As far as infidelity people lie in fear of hurting their spouse. Lies hurt just as bad as the truth can.

That's exactly the case with the xtian belief systems; such "faith" is a lie they tell themselves, (because there is no factual basis/evidence for such beliefs).  They seem to object to and shy away from this being mentioned because they apparently cannot process reasoning which invalidates their non-reasoning, (hence, the self-deluding lie of blind faith).

They lie to cover other lies!

That would account for bible thumping believers then.

I'm with you on this one. It's better to hear the truth from that person than to hear it from someone else. It still is going to hurt but not as much.

Everyone lies.  Some people lie to make sure people's feelings don't get hurt like telling a kid their cat when to live with an old man who needed the company instead of telling them he was splattered all over the road by some idiot teenager.  =-P

The majority of people tell exaggerated lies such as beefing themselves up for a job interview.

Then there's the career liars, who tell lies so they not only take advantage of people, but sometimes lie just to sharpen their skills.  Out of all the liars, those are really the only ones that I'd be wary of when it comes to people.  I'd say those people have no moral code except to curb stomp other people who could potentially get in their way in life.    :-X

Either way, everyone lies.  This isn't something new.  I'd just get use to dealing with it.

Yes I agree,  everyone tells lies at one time in their life.  Its a shame a person has to at times but its life.  I was brought up to not tell lies as well.  But.....  sometimes you have to protect someone else.  Honesty is the best policy however.  Good luck all at being HONEST.  :)

This is sorta a mixed bag for me.  I was taught to tell the truth, but there is a difference between being brutally honest and sorta sugar coating it.  From my experience, people tend to either be brutally honest ("those pants make your butt look like two pigs trying to escape") or lie a bit to sorta lessen the blow ("they're kinda tight, might just be marked the wrong size").  Personally, I would prefer people talk the second way, because it seems people are brutally honest just so they can be rude and get away with it.

Other people tend to lie to benefit themselves.  Either to cover up something they did, to make themselves look better, cause they can, etc.  Why people do things is always up for debate and we will never know their true intentions.

People lie for a lot of reasons. Sometimes people lie for worrying about offending someone, because they're embarassed to say the truth or maybe they want something to sound more exciting than what really happened.

I do my best to be honest; however, I've caught myself lying if someone asks me a question....

when the truth is none of their business.

Sometimes it's easier to lie to someone than to be honest enough to tell them that they've over stepped the boundries.

People lie because the truth will either make them appear a way they don't want to, put them in risk of losing something they value, or they're just habitual liars and it comes naturally so they lie when they don't even have to.
