"The CALM Act gives the FCC until December 15, 2011 to create and adopt rules - federal regulations -- by which the CALM Act will be enforced. One year following the date on which the FCC's CALM Act regulations are adopted, TV broadcasters, including all standard, cable and satellite broadcasters, will be required to comply with the regulations, (that is, by 12-15-2012).

Even before the CALM Act regulation take effect, you can report TV commercials that seem louder than the program they follow to the FCC. When reporting your complaint to the FCC, be sure to include the time, channel, a description of the commercial, and whether you are watching TV using cable or satellite service or are watching broadcast television using an antenna."

One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

My old Sony tv had a sound equalizer setting that eliminated that problem. Kept the volume at a consistant level. My new tv doesn't to that.

Aww thank you Falcon :)

Yeah, yeah ... I remain dubious that advertisers will comply with the new regulations since TV networks derive their revenue from advertisers and can easily lower the volume on programming, making the ads "seem" louder - just like they do now.

Some years ago I remember hearing some TV official giving a reason to the effect that wasn't true but I never believed him. When the commercial comes on I just mute them or lower my volume.

Hi, that's what I end up doing as well and it becomes soooo aggravating having to do that all the time  :BangHead:

I wonder if the rationale behind increasing the volume is the expectation that people tend to run mini-errands during commercials (run to the kitchen, bathroom, etc) - so the advertiser increases the volume so people can at least hear the ad when they are away from their TV/Radio.  I know I rarely sit through ads and am up and about.  Could be one hypothesis.  I can see this being more true for TV ads vs radios ads...as with radio, many people might be using headphones so location would not be an issue.

Yeah, TV commercials are louder than regular programming.  Someone told me once it was the advertizers thought people would pay more attention if the commercials were louder.  Therefore maybe more of their product would be sold.  I think they're wrong, but who am I.  I must say some of them I do get a kick out of though.

:notworthy: I have no idea, but I don't like commercials that interrupt my movies and showgames.
