Expendable in this economy
« on: November 02, 2012, 06:46:40 pm »
A recent trend where I am employed is to treat employees like we should be grateful we have jobs, and reminding us that we are expendable bc there are many desperate people looking for work.
Rather than being appreciated or treated with any loyalty, we are given additional responsibilities, etc. It basically makes everyone disgruntled but unable to complain for fear of being fired/replaced.

Anyone else dealing with this?

forgot to mention that this is a professional environment with salaried individuals holding graduate degrees.

I think this has been a growing problem for years.  There are a couple of generations of people that don't even know what a good job is.  People have learned to believe that if they receive any benefits through their work at all, this is a job they can't afford to lose.  They will accept pay cuts, split shifts, and putting in hours for free just to keep their employment.  I also worked in professional jobs for many years and have a graduate degree.  My last job did not provide any benefits and paid as little as possible for a very large amount of work.  Quite frankly, my employer didn't have to care if I stayed or not or even if I did a good job.  They just needed a person with my credentials to get the work done cheaply.  When I left, there was another person in line just waiting to take my position.

These companies can afford to hire more people but they'd rather make one person do the job of two so they can be greedy and keep paying CEO's 300x more than their average worker.

We do not live in a humane world, that is for sure.

I am fortunate enough to have a couple of online jobs. And my husband owns his own business. The people I work for online are very respectful and considerate of my feelings.

So true.  Companies and corporations are in business to make money.  As long as there are people who will work for less, no one has to care about retaining good employees.  And that is discouraging.

Ten to fifteen years ago it was entirely different.  Corporations had to beef up their benefits and perks to keep employees in their employment.  That is the way it should be.

This is why we used to have unions.  Unfortunately, our government thinks that a Corporatocracy is much better for the people.  Keep voting in these republican's who support "job creators" and we will continue down this path of corporations over people.

I've worked union and non-union jobs over that last 50 years and there's been a drastic change in union jobs in particular.  The last union I belonged to was good for not much except collecting dues.  Maybe it was the union but I suspect with the drop in membership, it's all unions.

I see it where I work, too--the attitude that if you quit or get fired that there's a meat puppet to replace you right around the corner.

I think it's the same in all industries.   I've got 28 years experience in my field, and every year my boss refuses to give simple cost of living increases saying I make too much money as it is - and making sure to tell me that he doesn't need my license to run his office.   So after 5 years, I'm effectively making 11.21% less due to inflation.

Save your money. Invest it into starting a business. Learn to work for yourself and build self-sustaining passive income. Become an investor and live frugally. You can be surprised how little your really need to live off of. As long as you have an emergency fund, enough money to pay for basic things (Food, water, electricity and the internet (both are very good assets to start a business with), insurance, and housing) you can live a pretty free life if you have extra passive income and you save it and reinvest. It may take some work and some sacrifice now, but the sooner you do this the less you have to work in total.

The days of secure income are over.
