I think it's the same in all industries.   I've got 28 years experience in my field, and every year my boss refuses to give simple cost of living increases saying I make too much money as it is - and making sure to tell me that he doesn't need my license to run his office.   So after 5 years, I'm effectively making 11.21% less due to inflation.

Its your fault you did not invest into something that resist inflation. Its also your fault that you didn't try to obtain passive income. Its your fault that you "saved" your money in a way that would make it loose its value over time. Thats the problem with a job, you blame your boss for everything but it was you who decided what to spend your money on. At least for the most part (notwithstanding taxes).

This is the first step you must take to become financially secure. Once you have a good emergency fund, save even more and take those extra savings and invest them in ways that resist inflation or bring more money into your pocket.

I am not being treated like that at work but I am not surprised that people are being treated that way.  I do think it is done both fairly and unfairly in different situations.  There are a lot of people just doing the bare minimum at work, just doing what they have to to get by.  That is a problem no matter how many people are looking for work.
