To The People Who Don't Tip At A Restaurant Why Not
« on: November 16, 2012, 07:47:38 am »
I use to wait tables about 8 years ago (so grateful not to be doing it now) it just popped in my head to ask this question. Everybody knows the concept of going to a restaurant waiter/waitress taking care of you and you are supposed to leave a tip. Do you really understand that counting on your tips is a apart of the salary. They are paid under minimum wage. Just like when you go to work and expect your paycheck every week waitstaff need their money. Being a waiter is one of the hardest working jobs there is it's physically demanding at certain types of restaurants.

It's so messed up to work hard for a table especially a group and not get any tip. To the 1 dollar or 2 dollars tippers is bad but at least it's something.
The first thing a lot of people want to say is bad service but there are a lot of things that go on in a restaurant that you may not be aware of (especially if you never worked at one)that may cause problems for a waiter. For the most part cooking errors, messed up orders, lack of staff, call offs, running out of things, disorganization. That waiter/waitress is working hard for you if you believe it or not because she/he needs the tip. Next time you're at a restaurant and things may not being going smoothly remember it may not be their fault. Or if your one of those people who just don't care and don't do it just because, really think about if it was you or your husband or wife trying to take of your household. People who have never waited tables before will never understand it's such a slap in the face.

it is not their fault but it not yours either. why pay for service that wasn't satisfactory. Also not all restaurants make waiters work under minimum wage, as a matter of fact it is illegal for some to operate like that.

Tips are a gift, and not something that should be expected.

You should try getting paid under minimum wage and be told that tipping is a gift.
Many of these people make the meat of their money off tips, and it's extremely disgusting to me when people don't leave a tip.

lesson of the day, do not take a job that pays under minimum wage. Especially if you live in the united states.

I agree! I think people should leave a tip. I was never a waiter, but I dont do to others what I would not like it to be done to me

I always tip at a restaurant. The amount of the tip depends on the quality of service and the service has to be really bad for me to not leave a tip.

I paid for college by waiting on tables and bartending.  Waiters/waitresses are taxed on eight percent of the dollar value of food/drink served.  With this in mind a tip is not a gift.  It is an appreciation of service and a large percentage of servers give great service.  I would like to see the people who don't tip be forced to be a server for one week and see if they fail to tip in the future.  I had someone who ran me around all night long in the rudest of manners.  They paid their bill, didn't tip, and continued to demand service from me. Quite stupid given that they were receiving things from me that could be tampered with.

I have waited on tables and paid off a large debt that i was stuck with in a divorce. The wages were way below mim.. The owners get by with the low wages because they figure your tips will make up the differences and for the most part they do. But then the govt. got their sticky fingers in it and now the wait people have to pay the first 8 percent of their tickets as taxes. So even if you are only leaving 10% the staff is really only get 2% so it is best to leave at least 15-20%. But thanks to all of the waiters and waitresses out there i know you work hard.

Hmmm let me see. I have a mechanic that provides a service and I expect him to do his job and fix my car after all he is being paid by the hour from the company who hired them. I have Mailman who deliver's my mail paid again by the company who hired him. I have a person at the register who provide a service as scanning my item's and then I bag my own groceries unless I go to Ralph's or Stater Bro's are they not paid by the company that hired them? What I am saying is I have always tipped a server at a Restaurant, but I always wondered why because they are getting paid already to they job. If you are not getting tips does that mean you wont get paid for doing your job that you were hired to do. Also did you apply for that job and expect to be hired because you may get big tips? I just don't get why the server's excuse me waitress/waiters of the world should be tipped and then not anyone else. They all provide a service and that service to make the customer feel welcomed and in hopes they will return to this business, because if they do then the business will make more money. I will continue to tip but also I will continue to wonder why they are so special. Yes I have worked as a waitress before and the main thought on my mind was if I do a good job I will probably be promoted or my wage will be higher because of the good job I do, and when the customer return they will want to be seated at my table. In return there should be a commission for the waitress or waiter who can bring back customer's and not because they want more tips but it's just good for business. My Dad was Charter Bus Driver, he made hundred's of dollars in tips. You know why he did, because he provided something the company didn't and that was music of different kind. He provided things like what ever people that was on his bus a service that catered to they wants and needs. Something outside of what the company provided like their kind of music or to make quick stops of they choices etc.
My Dad tipped the Mailman at the end of the year around Christmas time because if the Mailman knows you he will make sure even if there is the apt or condo number left off the envelope and Its the same name on mailbox he still delivered. Some Mailmen wont do this. Yes I know it has happened. Its not in there job description to over look the little things. Am I saying the Mailman did it because of tips yes because he was in appreciation of doing something outside of they job description. Tell me in a waiters/waitress job description it says that they are not suppose to serve food or make sure the customer is satisfied.

servers only get paid a couple dollars an hour by the restaurant...they rely on the tips to make their wages meet minimum wage...the average of 15% is what is appropriate to make minimum wage...if the server does a really good job and the service is great...then give them a little more to show your appreciation,

I think the 'refuse to leave a tip' crowd are usually just cheapskates.

I think the cheapskates are the employer's who refuse to pay a server for a job well done based on that if they think that tips should suffice they income. After all I don't go to the diner because I have a good server. If my food isn't good that server wont get anything because of the nasty food that the business served and also because they wont have anyone to serve. I mean really a fare wage is a fare wage, employer's need to pay they server's a wage based upon the job they do also the good food and who comes back and say I want to be at her or his table. Waiter's/Waitress should not look for a handout if they are already getting paid for they job DESCRIPTION. Anyone can say what is more they provide than there job description let me know. Otherwise tips are obliged and not cause of the great service cause that's what they suppose to do. At anytime a server can have a complaint brought against them for bad service (hint! the job the employer pay them to do anyway without a tip).  What happen to TEAM work in the job.
