I tip everytime I eat out at a restaurant, even if the wait staff is not so good. Some place's do pay a few dollars an hour, but still that's how they make enough for living.

I always tip, but some people may not because they don't have the money or bad service, but others especially people that do have money, it is really wrong, I think they should pay all jobs, all positions should be required to pay minimum wage whether you receive tips or not. it just isn't right

If you don't have money to tip, you don't go out to eat. If I'm running low on money, I'll get it take out instead because I know I can't afford a proper tip and that's not fair to the wait staff.

I always tip, but in variable percentages based on the type of service I get from the restaurant. I actually tend to put in more than some other people I know. Perhaps this is due to a family member I have who is also associated in the food industry as a part time waitress.

http://www.paywizard.org/main/minimum-wage/tipped-workers

When paying your employees, it's of the utmost importance that you comply with the minimum wage laws established by both the federal government and your state. Under the federal law, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that a minimum wage be established, and that generally all employees except those who are exempt be paid that minimum wage.

The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 raised the federal minimum wage to $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. This rate must be paid to all nonexempt employees for each hour worked up to and including 40 hours in a calendar workweek.

Any time beyond 40 hours must be paid as time-and-a half overtime, which works out to a current minimum of $10.88 per hour.

If you don't pay your employees on an hourly basis does that mean that the minimum wage law does not apply to you? In fact, the minimum wage doesn't just apply to hourly workers. The law doesn't require you to pay an employee on an hourly basis just because the law is stated that way; but it does require you to pay a covered employee for a workweek an amount that's at least equal to the minimum wage, multiplied by the hours worked. The employee may be paid on an hourly, a salary, a monthly, a piecework, or any other basis as long as the statutory minimum requirement of $7.25 per hour is satisfied.
Who Must Be Paid Minimum Wage?

Even though you may have already determined that all your employees — or at least a few individual employees — must be paid the minimum wage because of their nonexempt status, check to see if your employees fall into this list of occupations who don't need to be paid minimum wage under the FLSA (but are still protected by other provisions such as overtime pay and child labor laws):

students in institutions of higher learning
students working for schools.
employees in American Samoa and some employees in Puerto Rico
tipped employees, in conjunction with tip credit.

I don't tip only if I get very bad service, which is very rarely, therfore I try to make it a habit to leave something for the individuals who serve me. :icon_rr:

the way i see it the government wants to control this by saying they have to pay 15% on every check in tax so if a waitress gets stiffed she pays the tax anyway. this should not be

I myself have worked in the service industry and one thing I do not look upon someone else to tip me unless I do something outside my JOB DESCRIPTION. Like when someone say it's my birthday you may bring a balloon. Like when someone say it is my Anniversary I try to bring a piece of cake or something. The server is ALWAYS gonna be paid whether you tip or not. No one should expect things outside their JOB DESCRIPTION unless they are doing something that is not in it.

Are some of you guys serious? DON'T go out to eat, if you don't want to feel obligated to tip. Whether service is bad or not, you still tip. Stay home and cook your own meal. You're not just paying for the meal at a restaurant, you're paying to get served. You're still getting served even if it's not up to your standards. I'm amazed with some of you.

And 15% should only be given if the service isn't good. That's really low. "Tipping should only be done for a job that goes above and beyond my expectations."? No, tipping is part of what you factor in to your budge when you decide to go out to eat. Like someone else said, waiters get below minimum wage because of tips. If you're going to be cheap, STAY HOME.

Wrong, if you want a tipped then do your damn job. I'm not paying you to look pretty, flirt with the busboys or customers, chat with the other servers or text on your cell phone. I don't expect perfection and I get that people can have a bad day, however you can usually tell if someone is just having a off day or if they are just being lazy and rude. I've even left larger than normal tips to people who tried their best and just seemed to be having a hard day even if they did mess a few things up simply because they tried and I wanted to make them feel better. I will not however reward or pay or rudeness, laziness or down right unproffesional behavior. If they don't like it then they can suck it up and either find a new job, or get better at the one they have.

I think that tipping waiters and waitresses is necessary especially if they have provided great service. I love when I have a nice and friendly server. If the server seems disrespectful, rude, or nonchalant, I give less of a tip. I honestly don't think they deserve a tip at all. Sometimes I don't have spare change to give when it comes to tipping.

When I go to restaurants, I take a lot of things into consideration when it comes to tipping. I don't hold things against them that aren't their fault, like if they wrote my order down correctly but the person who made it didn't make it correctly, that's not the server's fault so I'm not going to hold that against them. Plain and simple though, if their service (to the extent of what their job entails) is terrible, then they will not be getting a good tip (if at all) from me.
