I agree with what I believe you are trying to say.  Welfare money should not be used to purchase drugs, whether they are legal or illegal drugs. They should be using their food stamps, if any to purchase food. So you are in favor of of testing people to determine if they are on drugs. And if so not allow them to receive food stamps, welfare or unemployment insurance or any type of public assistance. Okay I am on the same page.

There are states that are now approving legislation for drug testing before qualification for the programs.  However, please do not lump all welfare recipients in whatever ghetto mentally you believe they have.  I am living with a very dear, sweet man who has worked hard in the auto industry all his life, however has now gone blind.  If a little bit of food stamps less than half makes up for the way he used to be able to provide for his family, you are saying that he cannot have a cigarette in his living room in his home listening to his books on tape?  I totally agree with you saying that food stamps should NEVER be sold for cash.  I do not believe in that.  But, I would not withhold a man who has worked hard for as much of his life back from the simple enjoyment of a little cigarette if that is what relaxes him.  So are you, with that logic, saying that if groceries are bought on food stamps, then that family doesn't have the right to use Tide or whatever of the better brands of non-food products?  I could never say that, because I have spent my life working in the retail business and just simply appreciate each customer in the door and am glad the store I worked in keeps the products available they are looking for and that they come back.

What is this ghetto mentality you speak of? Is that the same as redneck mentality or trailer trash mentality or whatever else mentality, besides just plain and simple that some just keep bashing welfare recipients and really not knowing who they consist of. I take offense to that comment of Ghetto, there are many people all over United States  getting Welfare. No one is lump together in some sort of Ghetto mentality. Are you kidding me!

I wholeheartedly apologize if my post came across wrong.  I was referring to the original poster talking about people buying their beer with their cash.  I am truly not of that belief at all.  I am a true believer in there is a real group of people who need and deserve the assistance and that unfortunately, there also is a real group of people out there who do not really need them, but get them and there are people who sell them.  It is unfortunate.  But not everyone who utilizes the programs lives on Section 8, collects stamps and sits home doing nothing but drinking and smoking cigarettes all day long.

I think welfare should be for NECESSITIES only....necessities! (unfortunately alcohal and cigarettes do not fit in that category)....maybe those would make good birthday and Christmas list items...

I am on food stamps and I can tell you both my husband and I work very hard. We do not go out and buy the wrong types of items. I purchase soda because I am a narcoleptic who cannot afford medicine. I have to have caffeine to keep me awake. I just got a part time job even though I graduated with a medical records degree. Its hard finding a job when you do not yet have the experience. My husband does ashphalt, but has only been getting a little work. I hate being on the system, but its there for people like me and my two daughter who need it.

Where I live you can get food stamps and financial assistant.  When I see people using a ebt card to buy cig.  I know they have financial aid.

ineqaulity  .....a kid can have a room full of toys, yet not have any food in their house.  people will drive $30,000 cars and have their electric disconnected.  its not a perfect world and if you know how to fix it then you deserve a medal.

very frustrating system when people abuse the system.  it's ashame that some people who play the system ruin it for others who are truly in need.

 I totally agree with you, they should come out with a way of helping people and making sure they don't use this money for anything that like that.
