Twinkies
« on: November 17, 2012, 06:11:24 pm »
Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on Hostess going out of business?

Personally, I think it is another example of how unions - though very good in the beginning have become too powerful.  A lot of people would have been happy to have those jobs without the terms the union was demanding. Just my opinion.  Anyone else have thoughts?

I agree with you.  Now, those people have NO job.  I wonder how they feel about their union now?

I suppose it was okay that the CEO got a 300% raise and 9 executives got 60 to 100% raises?  All while they were cutting pay and not paying into pensions and still running the company into bankruptcy.  Yep those greedy unions sure are the bad guys here

I agree with heroftimes.  We all know that the top executives make more then the rank and file workers.  However, those kind of increases are sheer greed like the execs in the banking and financial industry.  I do feel sorry for all the people out of work.  The people who work for their local bakery showed up and simply found themselves locked out.  It may have happened eventually since the kind of over processed junk Hostess makes is becoming less and less popular these days, but it sounds as if management bleed it dry and caused that to happen much sooner.

Very crazy indeed.  Have you guys seen on Ebay people are selling them for really high prices. I assume most stores are sold out or close to it.
Its sad to see such a longtime semi-icon going. I wasn't crazy about them but never pictured seeing them close down.

I had no power because of the effects from SUPER STORM SANDY!  I have been out of the loop!  No TWINKEES?  That is just WRONG!  I grew up with them and I do... eh, DID love them!  However, I really believe that we have NOT seen the last of them!  Either someone will settle and RE-make them in a few years, or another company will start to make them again.  The money is still too good, and it will be greater with a comeback!

Unions are too big and that is why there is no such thing as American Made. The unions want so much money that corps are moving there manufacturing elsewhere around the world. Texas is the home of Hostess, and the impact will be felt here in the Dallas-FW metro area. Over 18,000 people will be looking for work. I wonder if those employees would have given up some of their benefits to keep their job. My guess is,probably. At least they could be working until they found a replacement job. If another company buys Hostess, I wish that they would keep their product line. I Love Twinkies and those cupcakes.

Not a fan of the modern-day Unions, I readily acknowledge their place in history, but in the modern age I think they're doing a lot more harm than good. The hostess case can be blamed on bad business practices by management and the baker's union deciding their demands are more important than having a job. In this economy a job is something you're foturnate to have. Not a fan of the unions, but I think it's a little unfair to put the blame soley on them, there's more than enough blame to pass around.

I'm upset that all those people are now out of work. Its really terrible. I never really ate Twinkies, but I did like their cupcakes...but my waistline doesn't need them anyway.

Well, there is a positive side to not having anymore twinkies and that is less junk for the kids and people who are overweight. I imagine that we will have twinkies back sooner or later.

I have enjoyed a twinkie or two in my day HOWEVER they are not a health food!!  Crazy that no one cared till they said no more.  A few years back they were condemned because of being a junk food that would never go bad . . .   What is sad is there are workers that were loyal for many years and now the company has left them.  They did make a lot more things than twinkies -- isn't Marita bread made by hostess?  Or was . . .
Comments about the union - good points both ways.  Guess I am more worried about a government that runs us instead of us running government.  Sounds like the unions may be in the same way now with their members.  There is always good in things that are started such as unions and government -- but anything humans are involved in can have a tendancy to go overboard and lose perspective.  Does seem that more and more there seems to be an inability to work together and compromise.  Years ago it was expected and now  . . .  I just don't know.  If I had a Twinkie maybe I would have more brain power to figure it all out and solve the world problems . . . LOL  LOL  The only constant is change . . . easy to get nostalgic the older I get!
