Depressed over feeling old
« on: December 01, 2012, 02:09:57 am »
I just wondered if everyone when they get my age feel depressed over being old.  I am 50 and lately I find myself feeling like fun is only for young people.  It seems like all I do is go through the motions of life to try to take care of others in my family.  I have been thinking about when I was younger and wishing I was young again.  I feel like after you get older all there is is work and worry and that unless you are young and attractive you just blend into the woodwork and don't really matter anymore.

While it's impossible to turn back the clock, the idea is intriguing.  However, there's plenty of life to be had after 50 (I'm 48)... I think the old adage you're as young as you feel still applies today.

im 51 and i have young grandchildren and they keep me feeling young more often but there are times that i do feel my age expecially with the 4 year old  trying to keep up with that child can be very taxing but i think that you have to go thru each day looking for the good and not the bad find happiness and you will feel younger

:) I just turned 66 and feeling useless and not in touch is normal. However, I look for things I want or like to do and concentrate on them. Get your mind off of yourself. Volunteer for some charity or cause. Keep your mind active.

Realize, you are not 25 even though your mind still thinks you are. BTW, my wife of 40+ years is 75 and she is still #1 to me.

Accept the fact that "feeling old" is normal but everyone goes through it. You made it this far, now concentrate on a new adventure.

You will make it.  8)

I've heard a lot of people feel this way. I think it comes from them not being true to themselves.

That's  :bs:. YOU are in charge of your own happiness. Who cares what anyone else thinks when it comes to what makes you happy?? Eat what you wanna eat; watch/listen to what you want to; go where you want to; buy what makes you happy; seek out whatever hobbies you enjoy NO MATTER WHAT...life is short; don't let the expectations of society/other people try to control you. Also, don't put up with anybody else's  :bs: (family included). Don't buy into the lies that religion and society at large try to sell you. These are the keys to real happiness (from my experience).

You still have a good 20 years or more to live, so LIVE. Take that trip to Paris. Eat dessert for dinner. Buy that sex toy (lol). Etc., etc.

I encountered a lady who has a decade or two on you on my trip to Thailand last month, and she was the spitting example of an old gal that knows how to have fun. It's never too late.

Stop being a victim. Your unhappiness stems from your choices...think for yourself and make decisions irregardless of what is "expected" of you. I'm not saying blow off all your obligations; just rework what is truly a "priority"...

I know what you mean i'm 53 well really 55 see you know your old when you start lying about your age. I'll get ready to go somewhere and look at my face and think well not so bad until i look at it outside(damn sunlight) and then feel like going back to bed.I think 50 is young if you died you would still be known as young.Meaning when someone dies and they are 56-59 the reporter will say died at only 59 yes i think good .stupid i know but i'm old so nothing matters.I like that my kids are grown and out of the house my youngest is 21 still at home but much more of a help now then when he was younger.Aging is something that happens to everyone so your not alone.

It might sound stupid because of my age but I am feeling it a little bit.  I am about to turn 28 and I just see 30 getting close and I don't like it.  I thought I would have a wife and kids by the time I am 30 and it seems clear that won't be the case.

fun is for everyone. You just need to find new things to do, being closed minded and thinking that young people have all the fun is just setting yourself up for boredom.

I am sorry to hear that.  You are in charge of your own happiness.  There are so many blessings in each day.  Wonderful joys are found in the most unexpected places.

When I turned 50, I bought myself an adjustable bed.
It is a blessing to take care of family. When you are helping others, you can gain spiritual energy and vitality.
At the end of the day, when you feel tired, it can be a good kind of tired because you helped someone.
Find the things that inspire you.
I am going to be 56 next March.
In recent years, I began to focus on the day I had in front of me, not tomorrow, not yesterday.
Something happened repeatedly that I couldn't control.
I focus on what  I need to do "this moment". If someone needs something, I turn my focus on them. I practice looking for someone who needs some help.
I just try to keep a neat appearance, not over emphasizing it
When a bad thought comes, make your next thought a good one. Life is a good training ground for us all.
Now, I invest in things that will last a long time.
We all will get old. There is no exception. Try thinking "oh, good for me, I have another year, more time....to be a good example; to become a better person; to learn from whatever there is in the day that I have."
I like to sleep at night. I have noticed that I feel refreshed in the morning, renewed every morning.

If your mindset tells you that you are old and therefore you must feel old, then you need to change it right away.  I believe you are only as old as you feel.  I am older than 50 and I still feel like I am 30 everyday.  I give thanks to God for all my blessings and not giving in to thinking negative about myself.  Get out of that rut and do something special for you-it doesn't have to cost a bundle of money.  It's the little things that count.

Consider the alternative.  Now that's something to be depressed about. :angel11: :angel11: :angel11:
