Can you tell a story behind a story?
There is a deeper reason for something that happens, a story that lead to the "surface story".

Yes in fiction sometimes the story comes from real life but is changed a little to make it more interesting.I'm thinking of Gone With the Wind, some of the story happened to the writer.I heard that years ago so Rhett and Scarlett were real people well sorta.
