Week 38 of pregnancy
« on: January 23, 2013, 04:44:03 pm »
I am 38 weeks pregnant and I am not start dilating yet. Does anybody know what to do to start dilating. I am worried because my tummy is big already and still so high.

In my experience (I've had 6 kids) you'll start dilating when your body is ready. Sometimes it happens within hours and other times it happens over the course of multiple days. I like to keep moving as much as I can. I found during one of my deliveries that if I don't use the bathroom often enough, it actually impedes progress. I went from a 3 to delivering 15 minutes later after I went to the bathroom. Sometimes, I didn't even realize I needed to use the bathroom because of all that baby weight. So, drink plenty of water and go often. Make sure to move around so those muscles will be able to do their job when the moment to start dilating is right.

Dont rush it, I found that labor is easier on those who naturally dialate rather then forced by medication or swift movement.

I agree. I've tried all the "so called" ways to induce labor and/or dilate right away- after all, I got pretty uncomfortable and just wanted to meet the little one- but those other ideas didn't work.

I haven't tried either of these:
I have heard of people going to a massage therapist that they've seen their whole pregnancy and they've been able to use the right techniques in the right places to get things going. Also, I've heard that acupuncturists (not all use needles these days) have a way to get things started. But, doing it too soon could be considered irresponsible, so these practitioners usually wait until you've reached a certain point in pregnancy.

Congratulation!  Not all pregnancy is the same.  Don't worry when the time is right your bundle of joy will let you know.  Walk and drink water will help the process.

i'm right where u are, which is weird. i havent really felt him drop yet. no braxton kicks contractions either. just mild back pain here and there and no leaking milk so it's not time for him to come yet but he can come at anytime. we're due feb 9th but kids have a mind of their own.

Thank you guys. My due date will be the Feb. 4th. This my first baby. Yeah, that was everybody said just take time and wait until the baby is ready. I do some walking about 20 mins a day and core pilates exercise every other day. I drink plenty of water too.

After having four children, I have come to the conclusion that no home remedies really help at inducing labor. Your baby will come when it's ready and I wouldn't do anything to try to speed up that process. With my first child, the doctor thinned out my cervix, so that I would have my baby by my due date. (He was going on vacation the following week.) Well it turned out, she wasn't ready to come out because her skull wasn't completely fused together and the colored part of her eyes had not finished filling out. I was a bit upset. My second child was 12 days late and he was healthy and had no problems. My third was 4 days late with no problems and my fourth was a week early with no problems and fully developed. I think when they are finished developing, they will come out. Good luck to both of you. Oh and dilation really is no judge on when you will have the baby. With my last two babies, I was 1 cm for the last 3 months. I also had a friend who went to the doc and was 3cm, but didn't have her baby until a month later.

I delivered my son when i was 38 weeks. I was induced but i had been dilated to 3 for few weeks prior. But you will dilate when your body is ready. If not they will induce you by 40 weeks most likely. I wish you luck!

You will dilate when your body is ready.  Don't rush things.  In my case,  I have one daughter (she's 27) and I was induced at 39 weeks,  three days and 22 hours.  They put an internal monitor inside me and the party was on.  My daughter has three children and she says the epidural speeds it up.  She should know.  She's had three.  When I was in labor with her I had her without any painkillers.  Congratulations on your near birth.
