This is a topic for those who want to share, learn about, or compare natural remedies for common and not so common ailments.

Natural remedies may include diets.

Ailments may range from the common cold to cancer.

There are many plant-based medicines that are available to treat pain and fatigue, including Dong Quai and Passionflower.

Other herbs such as Stevia help control blood sugar.

Elderberry is a great immune booster.

Garlic and Ginger have compounds which help fight the cold and flu.

High fat diets have been shown to aid in seizure control, reduce cancer tumors, and aid in weight loss.

I have a lot of information regarding herbal and plant remedies.  Feel free to ask specific questions.  I really do not mind answering them.

I prefer natural remedies.  I believe that drugs actually pollute our bodies with artificial chemicals that cause disease.  I spent a few years as a home health aid and observed family habits and the diseases that ran in those families.  It was sad.

I started this year with a detox tea and try to drink water with lime juice to keep my liver functioning well so it can flush out the pollutants I've accumulated as well as the toxins that are still coming in.

I get eight or more hours of sleep almost every night.

I'm gradually replacing good natural foods, healthier foods, for the unhealthier items.

I'm gradually reducing my sugar intake.

If you take it slow and replace/reduce things one at a time you won't shock your system.  One day you'll realize it's working, the cravings for "bad" stuff are gone and you feel much better.    :peace:

I like the idea of health remedis but I really can't afford it because madicd doesn't pay for them and I don't have ain income.  But I get migrains a lot and someone else I know told me when I feel it comming on eat black olives (this actually worked on me) It may work for some and not for others but it did for me. I also found that fish oil capsuls help me with high trigliserites and cholestol,  But now for a few yeas I quit and now its back so I need to start them again because I am so tired of taking medication.

I don't take many supplements either.  They cost money.  I'm on food stamps so I'm learning about food as medicine and accupressure/reflexology that I can do for myself.  Try replacing the fish oil capsules with real seafood such as sardines, salmon, etc.  I've discovered canned mackerel and trout.  There are also many herbal teas that can help.  Tea can be bought with food stamps.

Yes., they are very expensive when buying.  However, if you can buy seeds, there are common ones that can be grown relatively easy.  Garlic can be purchased on food stamps.  In spring, after the danger of frost, a small clove can be planted.  Garlic is very medicinal.

We end up spending a lot on herbal tinctures.

If you are in California, you get passionflower tea for about a dollar.  It is available in a lot of health stores but packaged by those mexican tea companies.  (You would know if you were in SoCal or other parts of California what I meant by this).

Diet is totally crucial, too.  High sugars, whether plant or processed foods will really hurt health.  I am a huge advocate against sugars.  This is very weird because I used to eat sugar on a daily basis.  But since dropping it from my health, I have seen such improvements.

My best friend works in New York and has clients she counsels on diet and health.  She promotes many herbal and natural remedies.  I was not a believer until I tried St. John's Wort and Melatonin for anxiety and sleep.  They really worked for me.  But you shouldn't use them without consulting with your doctor first especially if you take other medications as some herbal remedies have bad interactions with medication.

There is never going to be a time that I consult another doctor for any health advice.  NONE.  EVER.  Most doctors I have been to have done me more harm than good.  If a person has a firm grasp on what their body is doing then I recommend listening to the body.  Most people who are intelligent about their bodies do not need a doctor to tell them what is right and wrong.  They know.

I know that most medications cause a severe reaction in me, but doctors don't care.

I know which herbs to try.

I think it is best to leave it up to the individual.  The individual can choose what is right or wrong for him or herself.

I drink green tea,  lemon water and I apply ground turmeric spice in a lot of my foods. I haven't eliminated sugar but I started using brown sugar instead of white sugar. I'll keep track of this topic because I'm looking to change my lifestyle.

I consider myself an herb junkie.  I'm also fanatical about nutritional supplements to make sure I don't deal with problems associated with deficiencies.

My favorite herbs are the one's that are anti-viral because often times medical professionals would lead us to believe that a viral infection must "run it's course."

I believe it's important to learn how to self prescribe so we aren't overly dependent on others to "fix" all our health issues for us.

Oh...and...I also believe in preventative medical care so I have my B12, Vitamin D, HDL and LDL tested once a year.

Have a great day!

You are awesome.  My husband and I believe the same thing -- that we should not rely on others to fix us.  One of the issues is if there is an emergency.  Some medications cause serious side effects and death if discontinued abruptly.  I did not want to be in that boat at all.

We try to get our nutrients as much as possible from natural sources, as well.  And we are firm believers in the benefits of plants.

The Farmer's Almanac has a wonderful book with herbal remedies, their histories, and the compounds within them that cause them to function the way they do.

It is important to take self-responsibility, and knowing many of these plants can be grown easily helps considerably.

Common Sage, the weed Dandelion, and the herb Rosemary all have medicinal properties, and we have them in our backyard.
