allergies? sinus infection?
« on: April 04, 2013, 04:56:16 pm »
I have lost my voice, have a sore throat, am completely stopped up, constant runny nose, slight cough, but nothing in my chest... everything is in my head.  any ideas whether this is allergies or sinus infection?

I would say that you are leaning more toward a sinus infection, because I have had the same issue for several weeks now and without antibiotics a sinus infection is hard to doctor. If it keeps up maybe you should see a doctor. If you don't usually have allergies I have a hard time  thinking that it could be an allergy but you never know. However, it is miserable either way. Best wishes and hope you feel better real soon.

I have had bad allergies this season with a lot of coughing and phlegm and nothing in my lungs.  The problem is that every now and then I get another condition
which is very scary, debilitating and uncomfortable.  The condition is called "Labryinthitis" (not sure if I have the spelling correct).  This either an infection or inflammation of the inner
ear.  The inner ear is responsible for maintaining balance and equilibrium, which I understand the mechanism is very delicate.  I have been suffering with this now for over a week, on and off.  Thankfully, the vertigo is rather mild, but it is very strange.  I feel like I am walking on a tilted ground which tilts from left to right as I walk.  Sometimes it produces the sensation like you are walking up hill and then downhill and it alternates.  I had this one time and it lasted for 4 days.

I didnt know the name for that, but i have had that with sinus infections before. it is very weird.

I have had an infection for a while now.  I started off with a sinus cold and every-time I went to sleep fluid went directly into my ears.  I then got vertigo symptoms while lying down.  I tried to sleep propped up.  This went on for 8 days until I finally felt a little better.  But it never went away.  I started getting vertigo again and vomited many times and finally went to the doctor for antibiotic.  I was still getting sick on the antibiotic and called the doctor again.  Since I was almost done with the antibiotic the doctor said he would not change the antibiotic at this point.  He said take Mucinex D to clear the congestion.  I am on it now for 4 days and still not feeling better. I still get mild vertigo at times but not getting sick.
There is a massage that you can do to clear the mucus from your head and I found it on youtube and am doing this many times during the day.  I also put a sliver of fresh ginger in the ear that is really bothering me. I just tried that today and it made the dizzy feeling go away but if I remove the ginger I start feeling it again.  I am now hunting for more holistic help or other home remedies.  Any suggestions from anyone.
I am don't want to go to the ENT unless it is necessary.

This sounds like a bad inner ear infection... are you in pain? usually there is pain with inner ear infections.

You might try dramamine (OTC motion sickness medication). It can help with vertigo, though it may make yo u sleepy.

Thanks for the reply and the Dramamine suggestion. If today I feel dizzy I will pick some up.  The Self Lymph Drainage Massage is working great and it is amazing how much mucus comes down from my head.

I fight allergies all year long, But have an appointment for another shot wed. It does help. Elm, spruce, juniper and cotton wood are the worst.  It seems like as soon as 1 get through blooming another starts. Oh yeah and the dang salt cedar. Makes it rough to go fishing in areas. Can't have it touching me, so it is long sleeves and pants and it might be 100degrees. now that is no fun.

Every morning when I get out of bed I use The Self Lymph Drainage Massage found on YouTube video.  This really worked for me keeping the mucus out of my ears and sinuses.  Give it a try if you can find it on Youtube.  It helped me so much and feeling so much better.  Still taking Mucinex D.

I started fighting this cold about 3 weeks ago. About 2 weeks ago I was in Chicago thinking I was feeling better then I came home and about 5 hours after I was in the door I ended up coming down with I think the worst cold I ever had. I basically could not do anything for at least four days. I mean nothing. Then worst of all, I gave it to my whole family. I think I am finally starting to get over it. :dontknow:

My "seasonal allergies" now last all year long.  Recently with spring pollen in the air I have had to take a second allergy pill, as one a day does not last the 24 hours it advertises.  I saw on the news that allergists have developed oral liquid that can be used in place of the shots that were given periodically in a long series after a patient was tested for substances to which he was allergic.  It appears this would eliminate frequent return visits to a clinic for the shots, making it more affordable and convenient to go through the process.
