I am glad I don't smoke anymore. With the price, I don't know how anyone can afford it. :dontknow:

One day as i was walking to work (about 15 blocks) I counted the cigarette butts in the street.  On that particular segment of town I saw 228 of them.  You multiply that by every 15-block stretch of road and you have a massive number.  Its just plain tacky.

I don't smoke either and I would get upset if someone would do that to me. I just don't permit no one to smoke in my house and if that where to happen to me I would frankly tell the person in a nice way to please make sure he pick up after him self. If he's a friend he would understand.

You can tactfully tell your friend or buy a ashtray for him/other smokers when they come over. You can leave it out for him on the porch before he comes over so when he does go out for a smoke he sees it and uses it. Or give it to him on his way out to have a cig. They're not expensive no more then $1 at walmart or your local salvation army/goodwill.
putting an ash tray in front of him is the probably the best way to confront him about it. then again you can always just tell him to stop throwing his cigarette butts on the ground, it is your property.

I've known several smokers (I, myself, am not one) - and what I've observed is it depends on whether they think about others property or not.  I've had friends who would have the courtesy to ask for an empty can or something to put their butts into - knowing I wouldn't have an ashtray.  (Why should a non-smoker be expected to have an ashtray available in their home?)

Others just ignore the trash and dump their butts anywhere they please, whether conscious or unconscious.  At a recent event - the person hosting was highly allergic to smoke, and everyone knew this.  He set up a special area for the smokers on our team to use, and by the end of the weekend, there were butts all over his property - everywhere except the area he setup special for them.  He had to get everything cleaned up before his wife and kids got back, as they were even more allergic than he was.  I saw this as simple disrespect.

I tend to view people dumping butts anywhere they please on another person's property similar to if one was to bring a hamburger into a person's house, then after eating it, just dump the wrapper and napkin on the furniture, floor, backyard - where ever you were when you finished...instead of putting them in the trash.  If one was to do that, you would understand why the host would get upset.

I have a very dear friend who often comes to visit me.  He's a smoker and I don't smoke.  I respect him and the fact that he has the free will to make his own choices.  Sometimes he'll go outside to have a cigarette.  Later, after he leaves I find a cigarette butt on the ground in front of my home.  I can find a tactful way to confront my friend; however, I have a question.

Why do so many smokers believe that it's acceptable to litter by throwing cigarette butts on the ground?

Maybe because there is no place else for them to put their butts.  Next time maybe put a little plastic ashtray in sight - that should fix the problem!!!!

It's not just smokers...seems almost everyone these days think nothing of just dropping things on the ground.  People get so self absorbed its not even funny anymore.  Perhaps when your friend comes over, you can put a coffee can or something outside so that they can drop the butts in there?

Smokers don't care who has to smell them. They don't care where they leave their waste. Smokers simply don't care.

I am a smoker but I do have respect for other's and I will ask if it's ok to smoke around them and I will hold my butt in my hand before I will throw it on the ground if there is no ash tray around, but boy I wish that I had never started smoking though.

I agree that it isn't just smokers, but many people tend to litter, esp. if it's something small. Ever seen all of the places people leave wads of gum? Usually if some property isn't a person's own property, they don't have as much respect for it as would they if it were their own.
