So I have moved to a new town, and I don't know many people yet and now I have to find a new dentist, I have a major toothache.  How do I go about finding a new one?

Ask your old dentist for a referal. He/she may know a dentist that they would recommend. I did this when we moved 25 years ago and am still with the dentist my old dentist referred me to.

The phone book is a good way. I also looked on the internet for a dentist put your area you live in once you get there and than you will have choices.  I need a dentist to but I can't afford to go and  I have Medicaid and they don't cover dental with them and no job.

Call your insurance company and find who is near you and accepts your insurance.  Google the dentist and look up reviews.

I would just try one and see if they do a good job lol. Maybe join a couple clubs and communicate with the residents there, see what their experiences are.
