Someone tried to phish me on my PayPal account.
« on: July 08, 2013, 07:26:57 am »
I awakened Sunday morning and came to my laptop to discover that someone was trying to phish me.  My PayPal account was being suspended, according to this person, and I needed to verify by putting pertinent and private information into their e-mail as a reply.  I did not do that because I was overly suspicious.  I called PayPal and they told me someone was out to get my information.  I sent them a copy of the e-mail after church.  It looked genuine, and PayPal also sent me a list of things to identify when I am actually hearing from them.  It is not the first time I got phished.  Someone tried to phish me through the IRS.  They claimed I was owed $694.  While the money sounded good, I was overly suspicious and called them.  They told me that they do not send such things through the e-mail.  Have you had this happen to you and how did you handle it? :o ??? :o

I won't even acknowledge those types of emails. If it is legit the companys know how to contact me thru my home or physical address! Too many scams come thru the emails and internet. Glad you didn't give out any of your info!

I've had this happen a couple of times. The first time, it kinda freaked me, because I thought I had done something wrong. I mean, why else would PayPal suspend my account??  :o

But after I was able to log onto PayPal, I realized it was bogus. I contacted PayPal and forwarded the fake email to them.

It's happened a couple of times since, and I just forward the fakes to PayPal. I also change my passwords on my email account and PayPal account, just in case.  :)

I ignore, because I know that they have information to contact me appropriately; I absolutely do not click on any links as I feel they are just out to get your personal information; just stay aware!

I get those every once in awhile and I just delete them.  Don't ever click on them.

A very easy way to know if someone is phishing is to hold your cursor over the link within your email.  In the bottom left hand corner of your screen, you will be able to see the REAL URL you are being directed to.  If that URL doesn't match the LINK'S URL, DON'T CLICK.  Phishers are notorious for trying to get to eBay and PayPal accounts.  Yes, their emails DO look very official, however, if you REALLY read that email, you will find MISSPELLINGS in their English.  Those misspelled words are a CLUE the email isn't coming from who you think it is.  You did the right thing by calling and verifying if the email came from PayPal.  Using the steps I just mentioned is a tremendous help, too.  It's good to hear you weren't taken.

never respond to these emails. I had something similar with paypal when someone form china called in the middle of the night trying to verify if I had order something from there site, They immediately cancelled the order and my paypal account was reestablished.

I had the same experience like you had.  I called Paypal to verify and make sure my acct was in good standing and everything and to report that scam email.

I have experienced several instances of phishing attempts.  Some of the ruses these scammers use are telling you a bill is overdue, an account is being suspended and needs to be verified, an unsuccessful attempt was made to deliver something you ordered-- the list can go on and on.  If crooks would put the same amount of creativity into honest work, they and the rest of the world would be much better off.

That happens to me every few months. I never click on any of them. I get more than Paypal. It's a pain but I always forward the emails. All is quiet for a few months and then it starts all over again.

I used to get a lot of emails from Nigeria and I used to get from friends hacked email accounts asking for money because they're stranded in some foreign land without a dime 'cause their luggage and purse was stolen. Such bull.  So watch out for those emails from "friends." BTW, most of the hacked emails came from Facebook. I could tell they weren't legit because in parentheses was the real email address. What were they thinking? How obvious is that?!    ;)

Dont believe what you get in your email. Contact paypal directly. There are too many scammers out there.
