Maybe your brother in law did not recognize your voice and wanted to know who it was first. Those things happen.

Yeah I hate that,  I say Hello once, then Halo in Spanish, if no answer then I hang up.  I used to get calls from some company trying to sell some sort of medicine, they were indians, and just to play that game, I just heard tha accent and hung up, my husband once left the phone on the table and let them talk till they tired up and stop calling for a long time after that.

Sounds like you handled it well. I would have just hung up.

It was my sister in law's brother.  He is no relation to me.  I wouldn't have answered the phone but I was at their house.  My phone, cell phone only now, I don't answer if I don't know the number.  Most times anyway.  And if it were my phone I would have hung up immediately.  I just wondered if I was the only one that wanted to smack the snot out of people for stuff like this.  He thought he was being funny.  I just find it irritating.  And if I am not in a good mood it is more irritating. lol

After the second hello and no start to the coversation, I would say "Good-bye" and hang up.

i would say sorry hello no longer lives here and hang up the phone.  then when they call back i would let it go into the answering machine so you dont have to put up with their stupidity again.  if its important they will leave a message.
