Although when I was growing up I hated the uniforms (I went to Catholic schools up thru 8th grade), but now I can understand the importance of them. There isn't the stress / pressure to have the latest fashions or to be wearing the right brands. And in Jr High / High school, the uniforms are much more tame; teens are already in hormone overdrive so they don't need to be wearing skimpy clothes to show off their sexuality (I remember in HS how some of the girls would bring a change of clothes: the ones they'd wear out of the house that the parents saw, and a second set that they wanted to wear to attract the boys).

As to your comment about "gang colors", our HS did have a dress code prohibiting gang colors, specifically red and black. Yet those were the school colors... So for those school-pride fests (eg homecoming, football game against rival school, etc.) you could only wear red and black if the clothing had the school's name, logo, other other form of print related to the school. I think the color code lasted only a few years before parents became so fed up with the restrictions that the district changed their policies to focus on anything that spoke specifically about gangs (so a T-shirt saying something like "East Coast Gangsta" would be prohibited (regardless of the color) but a red shirt with hearts on it for Valentine's Day was legit).

I did not wear school uniforms nor have our children had to wear them.

I feel that there is a great deal of pressure put on kids today to "wear the right brand"  or you just won't ever fit in.

How unfortunate!  Petty things like the label on your jeans affecting whether or not your child has friends. STUPID!

So, I would be in favor of uniforms just to get rid of that problem.  I don't know know about the cost of the uniforms, but BRAND name clothing from the RIGHT store are very expensive.  That is why the kids without means don't wear the "label" on their jeans....too costly.

I had never thought about "GANG" colors being an issue.  I guess I am still in safe USA land where we don't have much problem with those either.

My grandson lives with me and had to wear uniforms last year.  I asked the teacher and she said it is the same this year.  I never had to wear uniforms, but I guess they had their reasons why to do this.  Some of these kids dress as if they are adults.  Maybe it is a motivating factor so they won't have the same incident.

I don't have a problem with uniforms and I really don't care what color they might be!! Anyone can relate something to the uniform whatever color they might be. I wore uniforms grades k-8 and then when I went to HS I had to wear neat pants (with a crease) and a white shirt with Tie. I think it taught our generation that you need to learn that you need to be dressed neatly when working. I am retired but, most kids that were half my age when I was working looked like they slepted in  their clothes. I always had my work clothes neatly laundered at a cleaners and always had a clean laundered set of clothes every day. I always received Bonuses where other people did not. I think employers appreciate they way a person displays themselves.

They started uniforms here when our youngest daughter was almost out of high school but the high school was not included in wearing uniforms.  I think they are a great idea and surely simplify things for the parents.  I wish they had been required when our daughters were in grade school thru jr. high as my 2 girls were hard to deal with about clothes!  They were so picky about what they wore and it was a big ordeal to get them ready to go to school each day.  I know a lot of people think they are too expensive but I never thought they were.  My grandkids wear uniforms and we can buy their uniforms cheaper than we could blue jeans, pants, skirts, and the "cool" t-shirts or blouses they would want to have for school.  Cuts way down on the stress level when its school clothes shopping time in my opinion.

I think all schools should have uniforms so that all kids would feel the same. There are enough things for a kid to be teased about with out adding in clothing. But I do agree that the cost should be kept low. People are struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills so school clothes shouldn't be a huge expense.

When i grew up going to school we did not have to wear uniforms, but there was a dress code and we had better stick to it. Girls wore dresses and or skirts and blouses, had to be 3" below the knee, no see throughs, oh yes must wear a slip and bra. Boys had to wear slacks, longsleeve shirt in winter but cold wear short in the summer and a tie. We could wear slacks unter our dresses or skirts to school because of the cold weather on the busses but had to take them off during school. Did not hurt us a bit, we dressed with pride.

I can argue both sides of the uniform/no uniform policy with equal vigor I think... there are benefits and detractors on both sides. I would think that one thing that really needs to be considered if a school mandate uniforms is that they be PRACTICAL. Meaning simple and suitable for use outside of the school environment. Say dark blue pants and skirts with plain white shirts/blouses. Surely not the fashion statements some kids want but still acceptable wear on school functions and other places.

Only 1 Jr High School has uniforms, but all the other schools don't unless it's a private school. The public schools tried it one time, but only worked for 2 years and then they did away with it.  :D
