I am native-born American and speak fluent English. I love languages and I majored in Spanish for a while in college.

I can speak it fairly well, but not great. I can understand it pretty well too, but having learned it as an adult, I spend too
much time translating in my head. Makes me kind of slow.  :binkybaby:

More practice would be the key. I take some time every now and then to brush up.

I did have a job as a travel agent once where I was the designated person to speak to the people in Puerto Rico.

I would ask them to slow down and they never would. It was kind of funny. I just had some pat phrases that worked pretty well with most things.
What's interesting is that they would always break into enough English while I was talking to them that we could understand each other.

People from other countries are not afraid to teach their children many languages and it makes for a very well-rounded and capable person. Wish they did that here in the U.S. Well, why not?
  :dontknow:

English is my second language. I speak Samoan fluently. However, I do want to learn Spanish because most people in my area are hiring and if you speak Spanish fluently, you have the advantage over someone who doesn't. More companies are hiring people with bi-lingual language skills because of the needs of the people they serve in the area. My wife had been to a lot of interviews this year and just job searching for the past six months until she finally got one but it was difficult because one of the the questions they asked her was, " Do you speak Spanish fluently?" Other people who are bi-lingual always get hired first because she doesn't speak Spanish. I would say if you want to learn a new language, try Spanish. It is probably the second most universal language in our Country.

I can speak a little Chinese but understand a lot more. I try to at least speak to my nephews in Chinese so I can practice and also so they can try to pick it up as well.

I learned Spanish in high school, but most of that is a distant memory.  I sort of recall how to conjugate some verbs, but I'd need a lot of study to brush up.  Would like to find time as I have a brother-in-law from Columbia and he speaks fluent Spanish.  Would be nice to remember enough of the language to have a conversation with him in his native language without him feeling like he's talking to a 2 year old.   ;D

I learned Russian in college.  I remember more of my Russian than Spanish.  I really liked the Russian language.  A very precise language, plus I liked learning the cyrillic alphabet (now I under stand what that CCCP meant on the back of the Russian Olympic athletes pre-Berlin wall era).

There are a lot of other languages I wish I had time to study/learn: Italian, German, French.  I'd love to learn Slovak so I can talk to my grandmother in her native language too!

Though, I was concieved/made in America,I was born in the Philippines & Tagalog should be my primary langauge but our parents wanted us to learn English that they didn't speak to us in our native language much. Because, we were expose to the language hearing them speak to each other, & their friends or Filipino get togethers; I'm able to get away with speaking Tagalog.   ;) I can probably learn Spanish cuz alot of the words from spanish & english can be found in the language. I really, like the Russian language, to me it sounds really pretty,  not fluffy like the french inwhich you could be insulted in such fluffy flowing words. German, it sounds like you're cursing or grinding your words. I understand alot of people in the US don't think they should speak another language cuz Americans speak the english language but it would be a good Idea to require Amerian kids from an early age to start learning more than 2 languages. If it's made manditory, the kids will grow up & think nothing of it & just normal. I envy kids from overseas, who from the cradle to adulthood have including their native language are fluent in 4 to 8 different language cuz across the board it was manditory for them to learn more languages aside from their own.

If you speak besides English, what other language would you like to speak?

I am fluent in cat, dog, and baby. lol

In a way I wish I could speak Spanish.  Not because I want to talk to people who come here illegally and refuse to learn English but so I would know what they were saying. lol
