I think they are smarter than we give them credit for
I have thought this for a long long time.
My dogs 2 of them i believe strongly that they do not even know they are dogs.
They act like kids.
They throw fits, they get into arguments sometimes
(funniest thing i have ever seen really)
When they want something they sure let you know too
and just like a kid when parents go to bed they
get into their snacks.
I have caught them many times carrying their snack bags off in the middle of the night.
Had to get up and take them away from them.
They understand too.
I will be talking about going somewhere and when they know they can go they get by the door
but when they know we are gonna be a while they continue to lay on the floor.
Kid you not... I personally think they are smart animals and if you give them the chance
they can impress you.
My dogs do.. Everyday
They aren't Just my dogs though
They are a FAMILY

Dogs understand how you treat them by your actions. They can understand feelings when your down and hurt or even happy. Even the stuff you say can effect a dog in certain ways the way you use the tone of your voice towards them. They can sense a lot of things even when dangers about to happen or happening. One of the smartest animals on the planet by far. One of the biggest protectors of all time. Even one of the best friends that's truly irreplaceable.

How you treat them  -  Absolutely.

What you say to them - I think so.  They just chose to not listen from time to time. lol

Absolutely!  My cats know me very well.  They understand me when I speak to them.  If I tell them "it's time to go home," they will go to the bedroom where we all sleep at night.  Of course, sometimes, they're just having way too much fun to want to go on my voice alone, so I snap my fingers and then they'll take off!

I used to take care of about 40 cats that were all born outside.  Even those cats understood me.  If I was looking for them when they weren't around, all I had to do was call them with the words, "Where's the little chickens?" and BAM!, they would come running!

People don't give cats enough credit.  They're extremely intelligent animals and can sense when you're sad, angry, happy, not feeling well or even fear.  They do communicate with you and can make themselves quite clear when they need you.  It's we, as the humans, that need to be more in touch with how a dog or a cat, or even a bird, reacts to us and "talks" to us.

My female cat knows when I am pissed off. I usually ignore everyone and flop on the couch with the remote, and she usually comes over and starts nudging my hand untill I respond to her. I simply tell her "I'll be OK mamma kitty, I'll be OK." And it definitelly helps  :cat:

We have had to spell a lot of words because our Abby knows exactly what we're saying. Can't say "going," "rabbit" (that one drives her nuts), "coming" (as in someone is coming) because she'll run to the door and start barking, and different food words.

In the morning, she knows exactly what time it is (time for her walk) and if hubby isn't ready, she'll start "yelling" at him, telling him it's time to go. If she is going for a ride, she knows "take a pee." When she'd one her evening meal, she goes to the bag where her biscuit treat is and if you forget to give it to her, she's let you know by a "woof" (totally different from a regular bark).  She mopes, too, if she doesn't get HER way. BTW, that's hubby who spoiled her.

The first year she was with us, we didn't buy her anything for Christmas. She let us know by putting her head down and going to her bed. After that, we made sure she would get something every year and we have to wrap it for her. Once she unwraps it, she runs around to show everyone what Santa left her.

Sorry for the length but she does so many things. We've never had a dog this smart before.

I think my dog understands a lot of what I say to her. When I say dinner time she runs to her bowl. When she is laying on the floor doing nothing I say lets go to bed she gets up and follows me to the bedroom. Those are just 2 but there are many more. She is very smart. I   her.

My cats actually follow me around. At 9:00 every night, they follow me to the kitchen for their snack, I don't even say anything, they just follow me. Then they go down stairs to their bed.

Oh, I think all pets understand their "humans".  It's all in the tone of the voice.  When you are calling them sweetly they respond to it by wanting loving, when you are scolding them they respond by getting down low on the floor.  So yes, they know the difference.  I don't know if they understand words though even though they do understand when you call them.

Do not forget: Pets are pets! And as such do not know how to communicate! Provide them with what they need: water, food, warm/cold air and comfortable place to sleep. Their survival depends on your actions.

When I talk to my dog he understands everything I say. He is the best dog I every had in my life. If I say sit he sits, It I say I want his paw he gives it to me. If I open the gate and he walks out and I tell him to come in he does. He also warns me when something is going on around our home. like I said he is the best.
