I've had them, they're no fun.  They can mimic a heart attack.  Check Dr. Oz's site.  I recall hearing something about them on his show.

They are terrible. One of the most common drugs for treating panic attacks is xanax. Klonopin is also used. Both drugs are in the same family but work at different "speeds". There are biofeedback methods that help with panic attacks too. One of the biggest things is to know you won't die from it even though it feels like you are going to, and to keep telling yourself not to panic and it will pass.

I started having panic attacks after my second child was born back in 2009 - they subsided but recently returned with certain events that have happened in my life. Yes, it would seem to be like a heart attack. BP (blood pressure) can be normal. Among being on meds be sure your loved one is speaking with a therapist on a monthly basis. Meds will help but just popping a pill isn't enough. See what is triggering these panic attacks and help with ways to just breathe and help with ways not to trigger the panic attacks. Talking helps tremendously and after being on meds for about a year, the meds can be cut back.

Some of these attacks are stress related: Do not upset your man!

I'm sorry he had a panic attack but thankful it wasn't a heart attack.  The same thing happened to my aunt a few months ago.  I did some quick research for you and this is what I came up with:

Panic attacks are periods of intense fear or apprehension that are of sudden onset[1] and of variable duration from minutes to hours. Panic attacks usually begin abruptly, may reach a peak within 10 minutes, but may continue for much longer if the sufferer had the attack triggered by a situation from which they are not able to escape. In panic attacks that continue unabated, and are triggered by a situation from which the sufferer desires to escape, some sufferers may make frantic efforts to escape, which may be violent if others attempt to contain the sufferer. Some panic attacks can subside on their own over the next several hours. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_attack

The main treatment options for panic attacks are psychotherapy and medications. Both are effective. Your doctor likely will recommend one or both types of treatment, depending on your preference, your history, the severity of your panic disorder and whether there are therapists with special training in panic disorders in your area. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/panic-attacks/DS00338/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs

Hope this helps!

I don't know much about panic attacks other than its sometimes due to stress
