I can tell you that down here in the DFW metro mess of Texas we wear hats primarily for protection from the elements.  Sun, Sand, Snow, it don't matter what mother nature dishes out a hat is a good first layer of head protection.

Protection - Depends: From the sun, yes. From cold, yes. A helmet, I wouldn't go overboard with it... Perhaps on a motorcycle, but not on a bicycle or even driving a car (yes, I actually saw someone wearing a bike helmet while driving their car  )

I could wear a hat for all three actually. I like the style of sports caps and showing support for a team. I used to have a Georgetown Hoyas cap a long time ago that I wore regularly. I also wouldn't mind donning a hat for fun ie a Green Bay Packers cheesehead hat.

And I know you can wear hard hats for protection or hats just to keep the rain or snow off of your head.

I would wear a hat for fun, for style and for protection. I like cowgirl hats, baseball caps and other types of hats that protect from the sun. I love hats so it doesn't matter the reason I would wear one.

Last Christmas I bought a Padora Black Velvet,its the 1st time I've ever wore a hat other than for outdoor sports.I enjoy wearing it when we go out.
